Real yakuza use a gamepad... but which one?
I've gone through three controllers in the last five years (two Logitech G15's and a Thrustmaster) and they've all had mechanical faults that cut their gaming lives short... and no, "Mechanical faults" does not mean the mechanics of my arm throwing it through a monitor.

Can anyone recommend a more durable controller designed for the wear and tear of a dedicated gamer?

Xbox One S controller + Rechargeble batteries. I have had this controller for two years already with only slight button sticking. But that has a easy fix. Plus it is blue tooth.

If you don't need the world's most accurate d-pad: Good old Xbox 360 controller is hard to wear out in my experience. I've broken an x-box One controller and two Elites in the last year, my 8 year old 360 backup/guest controller is still solid.

The Steam controller is great, allows for much better aiming in games that require it, and is generally more flexible than most controllers. As a bonus, it can also be paired with Android phones.

Ultimately, PS4, Xbone, and Steam controllers (maybe a few more) have built in rebind functionality with Steam so I would recommend against others.

personally i love the DS4, feels great to hold, the dpad and buttons are good, can use it wireless
also steam supports it out of the box (and you can always add non-steam games to steam to use it) and some games even show you the proper button prompts when they detect it (like kiwami)
only issue is that it's a bit pricey

DS4 for me plus it has a rechargeable battery out of the box

I have a couple of new style xbox controllers, a dual shock 4 and I've had a steam controller.

In my opinion the xbox controller is the best by far. It works with everything I've played through steam and it is the most ergonomic especially if you have larger hands.

The dualshock 4 controller does have rechargeable batteries but the battery life is pretty crappy, i think it's 1000 mah whereas I have 2x 2800mah rechargeable batteries in each xbox controller.

Personal preference obviously but having used a range of controllers I always pick up my xbox controller unless I'm playing on my ps4 pro.

Wii U Pro Controller + Mayflash Wireless Adapter.

Switch Pro controller is pretty thick. Don't know how well it is supported on PC outside of steam though.
But for steam games it is great.

I'd go 360, xbox1 or ds4. Ds4 compatibility feels like non issue now.

Yeah my experience with Logitech in recent years is that their quality is completely poop. I used buy their hardware a lot in the 90's and early 2000's, and most of that hardware lasted more than a decade. The downsides was poor software support.

But then I've gone through multiple Logitech F310's and G35's, all of them crapped out due to hardware faults. Anything from weak buttons, weak joints that snap even when handled carefully, to leaky capacitors, malfunctioning ion batteries, or malfunctioning wireless chipsets.

So I just quit buying Logitech.

Instead I bought some Audio Technica Headphones and a studio microphone to replace my headsets. I use an Xbox gamepad for PC. I've dabbled with my Nintendo Switch Controllers on PC but they force me to use Steam's Big Picture Mode to adapt them to Xbox controls, with mixed results depending on the game.

It's hard to beat the convenience of the Xbox controller. They're all solid construction, durable, and nothing can beat their plug & play nature on PC.

The picture is of an Xbox One controller for a reason. 😉
Get rechargeable AA batteries though, not one of Microsoft's special rechargeable batteries that only works in the controller. I bought a set in 2009 for the Wii, and am still using them today in my Xbox One controller to play this game.

Agreed.

The Steam controller takes a fair bit of getting used to, but it is the most "customisable"

i would highly recommend or else a steam controller or xbox360/ xbone/ ps4 controller

anything else, especially those third party ones can be a PITA since they arent recognised by the game and thus chances are youll have to manually rebind them for every game with gamepad support
