Admitedly in the first game he's a bit of a Joker expy (voiced by Mark Hamil to boot) with a bit more sense of honor.
It was starting from later games that his wackyness starts to become more endearing and he starting to shows a bit more depth. I believe when his blood brother enter the series is when he start to show his calmer and serious side.
In the Kiwami remake, if you do the Majima everywhere you'll see at times hints of his old self.
There's a reason Mad Dog Majima is the most popular character in the franchise.
He comes back gradually after each game.
About how Majima said he'd "Live crazier than the rest of 'em" ?
That's why the soulful, intelligent Majima you see isn't present, the Mad Dog persona is his outward persona, you'll see hints of the real Majima as the game progresses but 0 gave a very good reason as to why Majima is the way he is and how it explains why he is that way in this game too.
Also keep in mind that Majima Everywhere system wasn't in orginal game and was added as a fanservice, with a lot of nods to Y0. Personally I don't mind it but many people hates it because it makes no sense from plot point of view.
His antics is the reason why he's really popular with the fanbase and with each installment the developer flesh out his character more and shows a different side to him.
I believe when his blood brother is introduced is when his calmer and more rational side is shown, he never act wacky in front of him which indicates that there's more to him than meets the eye.
Then 0 comes and show him when he's a lot more normal. I believe it was initially assumed that his ordeal with Makoto caused him to go mad and become the Majima we know now.
The Makoto ordeal does bring some changes in him to an extend but I think the most surprising (or perhaps controversial) is that he CHOOSE to act crazy. His crazyness was not because he lost his mind, or stress, or any other issue. It was a choice he made after seeing and learning other's way of life as he said in the ending of 0.
Yeah, his depth and more serious personality was really fleshed out in 4 and 5 when he is reunited with Saejima. Shame we couldn't see more of them in Y6.
That's why, while still a retcon, the way he is in 0 makes sense because it's somehow similar to his older self from other games.
I kinda wish we could see Mirei Park in 0 instead of Makoto. She was really interesting character with not enough development and this whole failed marriage and abortion would make for interesting plot.
