Goro Majima is such a nice guy
He worries so much about Kiryu, who hasnt had a fight for 10 years and got rusty, that he supports him with authentic sparring sessions that perfectly recreate street fights so Kiryu will get stronger and wont get shanked in some alleyway
What a friend! Thank you, Goro!

I personally think Majima sees Kiryu as someone he can "latch" on for emotional stability. His constant attention-seeking behaviour ("look at me Kiryu-chan! I'm here!") can be a sign of someone who is psychologically dependent... people are always reacting to his crazy antiques, but Kiryu is the only person who is not bothered by him. Kiryu will not budge no matter what. Kiryu is rock solid. Therefore Majima sees this immovable object as something he can fully devote his energy to...the constant harassing is just to test Kiryu and see if he will explode.

Teehee

You know it's true ;)

Kiryu is rock solid. He broke the hotel floor with Majima in one chapter. The bullets are made of rubber; Kiryu's body is titanium.

Lol, I know what you're referring to but when you said "broke the hotel floor" It made me laugh for an entirely different reason

You have an active imagination.

Clearly it is a case of the hotel floor not being able to withstand their combined weight in that scene. Bullets are rubber, knives are jelly, but Kiryu is rock solid.

It's also quite well explained in yakuza zero in fact.

It is actually a bit of a shock to me when I saw Yakuza 0 Majima. I started with Kiwami, so I was expecting an event that will break him, or at least, a slow but steady descent into madness.

But instead we get a conscious, logical decision to be insane so people will be scared of him. Like, a strategic insanity to help him do his job better in the dark underworld. Sort of a camouflage to instill fear and respect in others.

But one thing never change though... that hysterical cackle. He still laughs like a hyena even in 0.

Indeed the true Majima is someone who is sick and tired of being exploited and abused. And finally flipped the tables on his abusers by being 50 times more abusive and sadistic.

Which explains why Kiryu fascinates him. The only guy who didn't want power or money but just wants to "do the right thing" in the mafia is just too radical a concept.

Kiryu is too good a guy to be yakuza but Majima is a dyed-in-the-wool yakuza.

TBF, towards the end....

* Shimano reveals that he expected Majima to disobey his orders and do exactly what he did... i.e. his own patriarch played him all along and had been conspiring with the Omi Alliance

* ...and Shimano proceeds to betray his Omi 'ally' to get back in the good graces of Tojo Clan, now that the plan has gone to hell

* Majima is tricked by Makoto so that she can go alone to Dojima, after he'd earlier refused to help -- and thus will be prone to feeling guilty if anything happens to her...

* ...which leads to his breakdown at the hospital from guilt

I think that Majima is a good guy that had to do very bad things. That explains his mad dog persona and attitude.

I think "good guy" is too strong a word for Majima. He's not that nice. He's not bad either.

He is willing to whack someone to get back into the Yakuza. Also willing to beg and grovel for paying customers and be a punching bag to his boss. He's a complicated man.

His base personality is not black n white, unlike Kiryu.

He risk literally his life and reputation to save a complete stranger in Makoto. An he is willing to solve people stupid quest around town in 0 just for goodwill, some of them very silly i must say. He is very nice with the hostesses too and even befriends the random bartenders or even the pervert guy of the city. He even takes bullets and stabs without seconds toughts for his frenemy who doest give a ♥♥♥♥ about him. Is that not a good guy i dont know what more to say.
He can whack another Yakuza anyday i agree with that but he doest harm civilians if not extrictily neccesary. But yeah he is not a black n white character like Kiryu, he is darker and crazier and thats his charm.
