Best Musou Game
Hi there,

i want to try out an Musou Game and i am not sure which one to get.

After doing some research it seems that the following 3 are currently the best ones:

Dynasty Warriors 9 Empire
Warriors Orochi 4
Samurai Warriors 5

I wonder which one i should get. I checked out the older ones like Warriors Orochi 3 which lots of people recommend but i just cant get over the bad visuals.

I dont care much about story, so i would like to get the one with the most gameplay stuff, like lots of chars, unlocks, combat mechanics and stuff to do.

I realy dont like the china setting of dynasty warriors, japan one is ok which is Samurai Warriors 5 as far as i know.

Any tips? :)

Warriors Orochi 3 is the best ever Warriors game by a distance from the sun to Pluto. So yes the game is dated graphics wise, but it has the most content, best story, best balance, not quiet as many character as 4 as it lacking the new characters from DW8 but still has loads over a 100, and it also has one of the best gaming soundtracks ever and it is just more polished than any other Warriors game released.

Warriors Orochi 3 combines both DW and SW settings and all the Characters form DW series up to number 7 and all the SW characters up to number 3, plus it has 2 characters from dead or alive 3 characters from NinJa Gaiden and a character from the Atelier Series.

Also to be fair to Koei as well this is actually a pretty good port with a few ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hear and there, but the PC version is actually very good value 35 pounds for the game and a good 80% of the DLC released for the game for it.

Sorry for my english i'm not a english speaker i'm french

If you try to find the best musou to play everybody will tell you Warriors orochi 3 and say every other game is trash. (everytime i try to find a good answer i only found Hardcore Warriors orochi 3 fan just say 3 better 3 better 3 better and nothing else i'm so bored of this)

Dynasty warriors 9 empire is all about gameplay not about story if you are here only for gameplay Dynasty warriors 9 best base capture musou actually (in the 8 you can just rush every level to the ennemie base and finish in 2-3 minute)

Warriors orochi 4 The most clean gameplay and balance the post game content is infinite mode the objectif in this mode is :

kill XXXX Soldier (the hightest i see is 2000) / kill XX Officier Destroy / Capture anchor (like a base) Destroy Pot / Kill Chaos

the objectif in this mode is to try to recrute all the character and craft all unique weapon

Samurai warriors 5 don't really have post game content just buy this game ONLY for the story post game is like maxed all character + bond in story mode

I'm actually playing orochi 3 the gameplay is a little rough no lock systeme (i have to move the camera every time because my character and the auto-lock direction attack lost the officier a lot of time frustrating)

For the graphic in pc version if you know how to use thing like Reshade you don't really care you can fix it.

Orochi 3 got the best variety in maps and content and got more game mode

Duel 3 vs 3 (i have to admit this one is fun)

Musou battlefields for customize stage and share it online you can change :

the line script of the character , change the officier encounter , change music , change de soldier encounter , change the SFX (change orochi SFX to Dynasty warriors 4 example) and other thing

Gauntlet mode is a mode you need to find the exit you play with 5 officier at the same time this mode have a lot of ennemie on the screen compared to warriors orochi 4

You can customize the character color too you want cao cao with pink hair ? here we go !

wang yuanji with black skin ? here we go !

The choice is yours

Dynawty warrios 9 Empires : Base capture systeme

Orochi 4 : Story + Clean gameplay + post game grind

Samurai 5 : Story + little post game grind

Orochi 3 : Best Story + Best variety + Post game grind

Gameplay in WO4 is completely unbalanced, Dynasty Warriors characters have been nerfed while the Samurai ones are a over powered due to them having their hyper attacks also the SW characters musou attacks are more powerful. WO3U the gameplay is FAR more balanced and cleaner.
Yes, WO4 is unbalanced. But these games are braindead anyway, so it doesn't even matter. Seriously, you spend most of your time kicking the crap out of dummies that just stand around doing nothing. Who cares if it's unbalanced? It's already unbalanced on account of the games not even really having enemies outside of elites and officers. Gameplay-wise, the two games feel mostly the same because most Musou games are practically the same game over and over again. You go into a map, either spend a while pointlessly hitting peons or ignoring them, and go from enemy officer to enemy officer in order to get the leader to come out. Honestly, my favorite is Samurai Warriors 4, but that's not on PC aside from the expansion and a spin-off. The spin-off is good too, though.

Okay, I will have to seriously amend your list OP, because that's certainly not the ones I would choose as first musous for various reasons:

Dynasty Warriors Empires is a sub-serie of Dynasty Warriors, which allows a lot of customisation and a very sandboxy experience, but it's a sub-serie which has very little in term of actual story focusing on the story you make instead. As such, you don't get to discover the characters and know what they are about, their personnalities, stories, etc... I honestly would say to only try Empires after having first played a Dynasty Warrior game.

Second, Warrior Orochi is a serie which combines Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warrior characters, as such to really know the characters, you need to have at least played one of each to really appreciate the crossover, and to not feel a bit lost. Warriors Orochi 4 is a very good game with that said, with its flaws, but still super fun and anjoyable. A lot of people say 3 is best, but 3 does lack a bunch of quality of life features for slightly more modern games.

So my recommendation?

That would be to start with Dynasty Warrior 8 Xtreme Legends. It's the first one which was ported on Steam, and because of that, they put a lot of job on porting it correctly. Not only that but it's usually quite cheap during sales. It has a campaign which covers most of the characters of that serie, it's, you could say, the classic musou game experience with a lot of niceties in it. It has a bunch of campaign covering almost all characters, it has the Empire mode which is more sandboxy and grindy but offer a long campaign challenge as you play as the character you wish and recruit all the others ones by beating them in battle in an effort to make an army to unite the Three Kingdoms. You have as such, a boatload of content and you will be as close to the original experience as possible.

Second I would say Samurai Warriors 4 which is a different era and place, but will do a good job at introducing you to the Samurai serie. I honestly think it's not as in depth as DW 8, with less content, but it's still quite fun. That's the two I would start with(assuming you liked DW8).

From there, if you are hooked, you have a lot of options: The Empire serie if you want more DW with the sandbox experience(Do be careful that Empire 8 has no mouse control for the camera which is quite nasty), or Warriors Orochi if you want the crossover experience with magic and gods thrown in the mix. Or you could go with Warriors All Stars, which is a less pleasant and grindy experience but has characters from all around Tecmo Koei titles(even some obscure ones). Or you could get totally out of that and try games such as Berzerk Band of the Hawk, and others musou games based on different anime franchises altogether! Especially if you are on console, you have some based on Zelda or even Gundam. This rabbit hole goes deep(not talking about mine... ).

Anyway that's my recommendation!

I’d say if you wanna start off easy then play Touken Ranbu warriors as it’s catered to those who don’t have experience with musou games, although if you want to start with the best I’d say either warriors orochi 3 ultimate or Berserk and the band of the hawk

Musou Orochi Z. Too bad they never translated in English. I managed to 100% the campaign with basic guidelines from japanese players, but i was unable to play the other modes for obvious reasons.

Just get this and skip the story. it looks alright at max settings and objectively has the BEST combat and flow in the WO series also the largest roster and with the ultimate edition its bursting at the seams in content too. so you don't have worry about that.

Orochi 3 is a PS3 game, no amount of re-texturing can increase that pixel count. at least Orochi 4 is a proper PS4 game and it definitely shows. i mentioned this because you definitely care about your graphics.

There will be NO Warriors game in the future or any that came before it that will be better than Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate. WO3U is Koei masterpiece Warriors games, it has by far the best story, best gameplay, best balance, Gauntlet Mode is far superior to Endless mode, it has the presentation and the most polished also the most diverse characters as well and the characters have their proper weapons on them unlike 4.

Why do people keep pretending Gauntlet mode is good? It's really dumb and overwrought and you either make it utterly braindead easy or you die 15 minutes into a great run and get nothing. Endless Mode at least lets you tag combo and have actual fun, not that it's any better.

And the movesets are all better in 4 plus you get the SW4/DW8 cast which are all great.

Because EVERYTHING in 3 far better balanced, you can tag combo in 3 in gauntlet mode no is pretending it is better it is just a plain fact. And no the move sets are NOT better in 4 especially when you character with their wrong weapons like Da Qiao and Yue Ying, and the Samurai Warriors are stupidly over powered, and also let be honest here the only new interesting character in SW 4 was Yoshitsugu Ōtani and in DW 8 was Gaun Ying ping and lu Linqi the rest were a bit MEH. Also let not forget the soundtrack in 3 as well one of the best ever soundtracks in a video game. Only thing better in 4 are the graphics everything is far better in 3. I am not saying 4 but it is nothing compared to 3.

The only thing WO4 is the graphical leap other than than WO3 is the superior game almost on everything.

Exactly this.

Except more characters, better combat, better post-game mode, better horse/speed play, fewer terrible "poison swamp morale dropped you lose" levels, better grind options

More characters maybe but more variety in characters in WO3, but the combat is vastly superior in WO3 as in the SW characters are NOT overpowered like in 4 far more balanced. Post st is vastly superior as grinding in WO3 is more fun because the combat is more fun and you got more stuff to collect, like items and more weapons. Horseplay in both games is poor but still better in WO3 attacking is better smoother. Levels as well in WO3 are better as it is using levels from more of Koei franchises. Also Gauntlet mode is far superior to Endless mode again the that game mode is more balanced Endless is far too easy and very boring having to do these pointless missions. Like I said and like a vast majority of people believe as well WO3 is vastly vastly better than WO4.
