Particularly fun characters to use?
Kenshin Uesugi is my go-to in this game (and in all the games he appears in) since he was my absolute favorite in Samurai Warriors 1. However, aside from him and a few other standout favorites I play for their character more than playstyle, are their any particularly fun characters I'm likely to overlook, in terms of movesets and such? Mostly just looking for suggestions of strong, fun, or just people's favorite characters.

This roster is kind of too crammed to just try them all.

I've played with probably all the characters and have level up at least 100 of them to very high levels, here are some of my favorites:

Tanamo - ABSOLUTE POWERHOUSE! IMO, easily one of the most powerful characters in the game, exceptional reach, I maxed her range and she kills enemies so fast and efficiently its as if she's parting an ocean when she walks, crazy.

Achilles - Cool character, just fun to use, great kill animations.

Zhou Tai - Quick, efficient and highly skilled, stage clearer.

Zou Ci - Never gets old seeing him clear enemies with his cards, bad dude.

Huang Zhong - Best archer in the game, very powerful when appropriately leveled.

Tadakatsu Honda and Taishi Ci - Both great melee fighters, very good at crowd control.

Zeus - Lightning powers and leveled up is one of the cooler characters in the game from a graphics effect perspective.

Zhang Jiao - Mandate of Heaven - I love this character, just awesomely fun to play with!

Magoichi Saiga - Quite possibly the most powerful character in the game when leveled up, he can one shot NPCs with ease and four or five shot any officer, if not quicker, an absolutely powerful character!

Meng Huo - FUN!

Shingen Takeda - True OG!

Athena - Great shield use and unique character to play with.

Cai Wenji - the most powerful character when mounted. Seriously you just ride, spam X and watch how everyone around you dying. Best "sppeedrun" choice.
Ginchiyo Tachibana - like Magoichi Saika she's good with hyper attacks
Ares - his "devouring" attacks makes him so badass
Nezha - cyborg? Why not?
Gaia - her X-X-X-X+Y (keep pressing to extend) combo deal large damage and filling Unity magic gauge extremely fast. Probably she can compete even with Odin.
And if you want to have more fun you can beat enemies with the Brush (Ma Dai), Bench (Liu Shan), Rocket (Xiahou Ba), Boat (Huang Gai)

Athena has a fun "turn to stone then explode" synergy mechanic but her beam attack procs slay so often you don't even need to mess with it.

Saika's attacks almost all proc so many elements he can one-shot nearly everything.

Date has this property on some of his gun attacks.

I've been surprised at how much damage Cai Yang does. For a random spear guy, his launch combo deletes enemy officers, and that's with a random low-grade weapon and no enhancements. Dunno if he performs that well late-game, but for a level 1 guy running around level 20 scenarios, he did shockingly well.

I really do like Hades now I've unlocked him but he requires a decent amount of work to unlock. Other than that I usually have Athena and Odin if I want to get something done easily. It's been a while since I played before Ultimate so I can't remember many of the characters.

Edit: Forgot about Gaia, she's pretty fun to play as also. Another of the later unlocks though.

Dong Zhuo is a little slow, but his mechanic is skeeballing and throwing bombs which he can detonate with C1 that do good elemental procs. He also has on C1 a chokeslam grab which is just satisfying as hell to pull off.

I use him a lot as well, just a good, balanced and most importantly, fun character to play with.

Zeus plays a little slow for my tastes. Even with maxed agility his attacks just don't come out with the flow I would like, nor do they hit with the impact I'd like from playing a 7 foot tall 4 foot wide Adonis of a man. Dong Zhuo threads the speed/power needle into the fun region a lot better I think.

Kyubei is even worse. WO5 will be out before she finishes a chain.

Zhang Chunhua isn't gonna be your MVP (In a game where Saika just fires touch of death over and over and Athena has the petrifying death ray, the MVP bar is set REALLY HIGH) but a lot of her charge attacks leave enemies frozen in midair which you can use for some nutty tag combo ideas.

Yeah, fun's a big element for me. Sure, I can sweep maps with Magoichi, and that IS fun, but only for so long.

Kyubi is painfully slow. I have her with maxed agility, and even so, her good combos take forever to get out. Cool, though.

Two characters I would like to bring up are Ina and Kanetsugu Naoe. Ina is fairly mediocre off the bat, but she gets a buff from her C5 attack which increases the number of arrows she fires with her attacks. When buffed like that her hyper attacks become crazy huge, and if packing a decent weapon she is one of the best screen clearers that I've seen. Maintaining that buff can be a little bit of a chore, but I think overall she's worthy of note.

Kanetsugu is good all round, but again he has a buff from his C5. In previous games it made him literally invulnerable, but I think it might have been toned down now so that it only absorbs a finite amount of damage. Even nerfed he's still pretty much untouchable though, and a solid performer in all areas.

Athena, Achilles, and Ryu Hayabusa.

I am enjoying Zhou Tai with his katana slashes and enemies falling down in slow motion.

I enjoyed Ginchiyo Tachibana in one of the previous games so waited until she was unlocked. Just unlocked her and she is ~40 levels behind my main character so it will take some runs until she is ready to play on later stages.

Lu Su with a rake is also enjoyable character with some cool looking moves (jumping around the battle field) that I currently use.

Achilles is the only character that it is worth for me even buying this game. Before Ultimate came out I did not get it just because of him missing. I also do not understand why Warriors Troy was such a flop. The gameplay finally changed the genre up into a more tactical gameplay. Seems people realy like this stupid AI and being juggled all the time without being able to do anything mostly. I just wish there would be more characters of other games too.

I couldn't agree more, Achilles is just great to use and I still play Troy to this day, extremely underrated game, that said, it could be brutally difficult at times, haha. I recently picked up a MClassic and it was able to damn near transform my old PS3 library of games, looks tremendously better.
