If you haven't tried them, in first person, dark corners of the earth, conarium and, on a lower level, call of cthulhu, are good experiences.

How do you define "Lovecraftian"?

1) Written by Lovecraft. In which case no.

2) Like something written by Lovecraft. In which case yes.

I recommend the Lust series (Lust for Darkness, Lust from Beyond) if you looking for Lovecraftian, plus the dev gave away 2 completely free side stories. I would avoid The Shore, that game was trash. And no this game is not Lovecraftian, just a grown man playing hide and seek with a bunch of sack wearing dudes.

I've read a fair amount of Lovecraft. Sentimental protagonists; wordy 19th century prose; female characters collapsing all over the place in a medically inaccurate way (fear increases blood pressure - BP needs to be too low for a collapse).

Tbh, I gave it up as nonsense. Why is everybody suddenly (just this last year, in fact) fixated on such terrible fiction? Everywhere you go, people are talking about "Lovecraftian" where they weren't some years ago. He was pretty much dead and out.

I don't get it.

Unfortunately I know of very few GOOD lovecraftian horror games.
Try Song of Horror. If you want a lovecraftian atmosphere and can forgo the horror part, Darkest Dungeon and Cultist Simulator might scratch that itch.

He's just very well known for horror by most suburbanites in my nation & has been for sometime..

Sometimes things in that staple of horror do well, sometimes not. I think it's just his name is now tied to being synonymous with a specific type of mythos. That's where I follow, I like that type of mythos, not him or his work specifically at all.

You could also try The call of Cthulhu, and The Sinking City. And there are some upcoming lovecrafftian games that look promising....

Don't agree on the suddenly part, it has always been popular, but other than that, finally someone says it. Lovecraft had good ideas and they have been used as the base or inspiration for great works by others, but his own writing was horrible. I'm pretty sure a lot of people who love Lovecraftian have hardly ever read anything from him but only know the derivative works.

A really good Lovecraftian game that's not directly linked to any of his works is The Last Door. The graphics (huge pixels) is a matter of taste, I like it, but I can see how it could turn someone away, but don't let it discourage you from playing it. It's pretty scary and very Lovecraftian. (Technically, it's a story told across two games, both originally episodic, but I think you can only buy the whole package nowadays.)

As for this game, no idea. Only just downloaded it, but I think it's more of a folktale/haunted house mix?

Well here's a few recommendations with Lovecraftian themes:

Abyss of Neptune (free to play), Reveal The Deep, Conarium, Darkness Within 1: In Pursuit of Loath Nolder, Darkness Within 2: The Dark Lineage, The Land of Pain, The Alien Cube, Lust for Darkness, Lust from Beyond, Narcosis, The Shore, Song of Horror, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.

PS: I really liked Maid of Sker :flashlight1::lunar2020horrifiedrat:

Lovecraft has been popular with horror fans for decades, but the reason that he 's been all over the place for the last two or so years is that his catalog has finally come into the public domain and anybody can do "Lovecraftian" projects without running afoul of copyright laws.

Oooooooooooooh. Now I get it. They're using free crap rather than paying for quality. :)

Well, it is a bit more complicated than that.
Only a part of his catalogue became public domain in the US, and the Cthulhu stories have been written between around 1927 and 1935. It seems the USA is going to join the French/German rights in 2073, considering intellectual property rights will expire 70 years after the deaths of the creators.

A better explanation about the lovecraft trend is that more people "in charge" knows and respects his work, as he was just a Sci Fi magazines creator at the beginning. Now, thanks to the work of his first fans and cowriters, he is considered as a serious writer (and he is really a serious one).

I assume letting projects using his name is a good choice for those who still gain money from his works (and coworks). Especially since Lovecraft have been considered a racist and antisemist person, although he was just a product of his time and of a "university lecturer". Let's not forget that this guy had learned everything from books and, in his time, he could not understand everything. He was obviously lacking knowledge about African (descent) people but, in his writing, it seemed he used this ignorance to give them an unknown power to US people, a strong and fearful power. About his views about Jews, well, as I said, he was a product of his time, let's not forget the USA reject the idea to be a sanctuary of the European Jews (as all the European countries wanted to reject them... As I said, Lovecraft was a product of these times).

Loevecraft has written about that and, despite the high quality of his works, today he is quiet controversial. The fact is that he is a master in its domain and we now see projects inspired by his work. So producers (films or video games) want to use his name, but they feel the need to include some wokism values in them, although they were not Lovecraft's value. But those who have interest in this topic still need the money (even if they just gain money from their cowritting). They just need some publicity, without the controversial side of Loevecraft ; videogames are the way.

About Maid of Sker, I don't see the point with Lovecraft. People do not know what they are talking about, these developpers just made a game about their own culture, just respect that.?
