Don't get me wrong here please, ofc you can have a different opinion about okabes behavior or the course the series took rather i guess, since you can't help it anyways and I really liked kyouma for as long as he was around but directly saying "I hate how he whines all the time" is saying that you have no feelings at all isn't it? I don't mean to offend anyone that has this opinion though, but its quite irritating...
After all S;G got me into Seinen and changed my overall opinion about animestuff, I'll prolly be glad and thankful about that forever. El Psy Kongroo
From my perspective, they took the series' trademark personality and replaced him with a Shinji, leaving Daru as comic relief and the rest of the cast for fan service. There is very little of the original series' science humour (I actually worked at CERN). A lot of the dialog feels off, too, and plot development is glacial. I kept watching the show until episode 13, hoping it gets better, but gave up. A friend with a similar taste and more patience than me says it doesn't.
Okabe is even more annoying in the VN if that's your main complaint.
Handles the story far better, the scenes are more coherent and have much more sense, CGs are great and the storyline unfolds better as well. What the anime fixes is just a couple of stupid design decisions which you will recognize immediately, but nothing so big as to prevent you from fully enjoying it.
The whole story is different after episode 8. I dont know which anime you just watched.
