SD stands for Super Deformed, that's why. There was a terrible show called SD Gundam that didn't do so well but they like using it as a style as it's more cost effective and I imagine with this game they are re-using assets from the turn based game that preceeded it.

Rofl. 'SD stands for Super Deformed' is the only correct part of your statement.
The rest is complete BS and made up garbage.

All I know is it is a real disappointment seeing the semi decent looking Gundam games with the really stupid chibi art style.

When was the last time a good Gundam action game was released? I'm thinking maybe the Koei Tecmo dynasty warriors game(s) from years ago?

If you don't like the art style, then the game is not for you.
Wild idea, I know.

I don't like RTS games, yet I'm not so full of myself as to say 'RTS games are bad' just because I don't like them.

The reason for the SD style is to keep in line with previous games in the series. This is the next game in the series of Gundam games made by ArtDink with previous games being:

Gundam Battle Tactics
Gundam Battle Royale
Gundam Battle Chronicle
Gundam Battle Universe
Gundam Assault Survive
Gundam SEED: Battle Destiny

Also, people like the SD style, so that is why they keep doing it.

Edit: I just check, and this is the first game to use the SD style design, but the point I made that people like it still stand.

Gundam games generally sell much better in Asia than the west and SD Gundam titles do very well there. So when Gundam games get developed, the Asian market will be forefront than the west. Sure, full size gundam would be great, but in the end it's down to what brings in the most money.

I honestly don't remember the lat decent Gundam game.

I've given up on ever getting a decent Gundam game.

Closest thing we've got right now to a decent Gundam game is Mechwarriors: Mercenaries (insert all available sad emojis here)

It's so freaking weird, I'm sorry, but the Japanese game market is actual trash at the moment.

It's so sad because they used to make THE best games in the world, and now is just a corporate dystopia of utter ♥♥♥♥.

SD artstyle games sell well in the west you know? Crossrays and SRW 30 both achieved best seller on steam and is noted for their popularity in the west.

Crying about the artstyle is one thing, but SD Gundam is made because it is popular, SDGO was huge in NA back in 2011 for example, this isn't really anything new.

Two games does not mean they "sell well" in the West. I've literally never seen chibi nonsense in a non-Asian game.

I'd say getting best selling and being reported as such does infact, mean they sell well. It's clear you weren't around for things like SDGO, nor were you here for Crossrays or SRW's popularity spike on steam, but this is really a you problem rather than west vs east problem.

Uh, Crossrays has 5500 reviews - total. That's a "bestseller?"

Edit: lol ok, just looked, that's a 'whopping' 600 more reviews than Mechwarrior: Mercenaries, which is considered a super niche game. Dude, gtfo with this nonsense.

Number of reviews =/= Number of owners.
It sold pretty well in the west, just because you don't like the SD artstyle doesn't mean it's bad.

I can stand it if the game is good.

I don't think you know how steam sales work, here's a tip. Reviews are not sales.

The number of reviews is a VERY clear indication of what games sell well.

There's a reason Elden Ring has 400,000 reviews.

It seems to me you just don't like this art style and want everyone to not support the game regardless if its good or not.

No, it is not. Theres many more owners than those that review. Check steam spy or steamdb.

The SD series does very well in asia, so it makes sense they'd develop more in that artstyle. SD Crossrays as basic as it is for a TRPG I had a lot of fun playing it and was well worth the money.

If you want a good new gundam game, get a PS4 and a copy of Gundam Breaker 3: Break Edition.

Or get a PSP emulator and play Gundam Battle Universe. Both games are full size gundam experiences, one of them being an arcadey ARPG and the other one being a pretty fun third person shooter.

Or dust off that PS2 and play Zeonic Front.
