What's the point of being a sort of Smash mod? Indie Pogo looks already a lot like Smash, the auto-jumping gameplay shows some interesting aspects, and even if I was afraid at the beginning, it sounds like a fun and original idea. As long as you accept this choice, you can have fun with it.
I'm sure it wouldn't be that bad?
I'm not saying to change the Actual game one bit, even online mode
Adding more custom options is always a great thing.
This about it... Consider how this game got developed.
Let's imagine that we have a autojump toogle. You turn it on and...
Characters don't have walking animations
Characters don't have ground attacks
In general characters are lacking basic things that normal Smash-like games have on the start.
Yes, this makes the game simpler and more gimmicky, but I think this was intentional on the dev's behalf, because of easier time developing characters for this setup. You need to design less attacks and less animations, so you can have more characters faster made.
It's a trade off in design.
You can stop yourself from jumping, and there's multiple ways to go about jumping.
Just like slap city, this is a much more casual game rather than being super competitive and all "IN YOUR FACE" as compared to something like FD smash no items. But even then ,that's not a competitive GAME. It's just playing it in a competitive mindset. Besides, you've still got dashing, rolling, roll-jumps, dodges, spotdodges, recoveries, and all the normal stuff most smash games have. You just don't have walking.
Besides, there's a LOT of smash-clones. If you want to play something that's just "smash" then go play Icons. Or LXP/LTE/Project M on PC. Yaknow? There's options for that.
As far as longevitiy goes, no game has that these days. Games come and go in a matter of weeks, and this game was no different. There's practically no players, but that has nothing to do with the game having forced jumping. It's more that the game's appeal as a "Indie" title kind of dies off when you realize half of the characters are no-name types and that even something like the upcoming anime fighter Sword Strangers (With characters like Buff-ass Shovel knight, Princess DeLuxxe, and Isaac from The Binding of Isaac) has more star power.
It's a good game, but casually. Nothing wrong with that, but if you're wanting a "competitive" game, smash isn't the genre you want to be looking for knock-offs of.
I'd even argue this game isn't a smash-clone, but good luck with that. You're more likely to get Hitler to write a public note saying that he's sorry (From the grave, at that.) for what he did than get away with trying to tell people that Slap city and This game arn't "smash clones". Lol
I guess it's kind of like how anyone who found a videogame difficult would call it the "Dark souls of X" (IE: Cuphead is the *DARK SOULS* Of side-scrolling shooters! / Ninja Gaiden is the *DARK SOULS* of platformers.)
It appears that any time a videogame has any combination of jumping, a plethora of characters from different games, and attacks...it's a "Smash clone" now. It's closed-minded as hell, but if that's what lets you sleep better at night, you go for it. xD
Is it really? People will never be happy, and adding those options takes time. This game already has a real lack of design in some areas (Characters in the kickstarter demo had to be relegated off to free DLC coming "Soon") and the balance is REALLY REALLY not great.
As a casual little "Oh that was fun for 2-4 hours" game, it's great. As a game where you want to play it with other people and want a fair and fun game? Hell no. There's clipping through attacks all over the place, the game just crashes sometimes, there's no single player content worth poking at, some characters just take damage because they're a different size than others (IE: Lillac and Shovel knight's hitboxes are so wonky that landing on someone's head can damage YOU because of their size. Best characters in the game are Blockman (A small character with a projectile that damages 2-3 times at -8 per hit) and Zorbie, who can eat you through your attacks, literally crap you out and has an attack and can lock you in a corner in some maps with his axe by stomping the ground and then ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ his axe out onto your head for like 15 damage..
Characters like Lilac, Teslakid, shovel knight and so on are okay, but need work.
Work that the developers have yet to talk about doing. General talk is that it isn't going to be done at all, and the devs consider the game to be "Feature complete" and that it "Just needs the finishing DLC touches".
