Another way is to harvest herbs. If you see tobacco or plantain lily or any other herbs in leaf form, if you have it in your inventory you can right click and choose harvest. Will give you dry leaf that can be used as tinder too.
These are great tips, thank you! I was stuck on the initial tinder quest but after reading some other advice, I had a bunch of leaf piles that didn't seem to be drying out (probably too short a time-frame) and the advice also said not to cut down palms or coconut trees for tinder so I was really having a hard time... just cut down a dry-looking palm and immediately got tinder from it.
-Find Tinder to start a fire.
(eyes pad of untouchable paper sitting on nearby desk)
-Whatever you say, developers! I'll just go comb the jungle filled with venomous snakes and poisonous spiders for a while instead of ripping a few pieces of paper off this legal pad here...
Paper is not tinder. You would have a hard time trying to light a fire with paper using the hand drill.
My issue is that the review I saw before purchasing Green Hell said it was the most realistic survival simulator available. In a survival situation you assess the risk of every move you make and make use of whatever is available that can increase your chances of survival.
It's a minor complaint, just caught me a little off guard in the first few minutes of my first playthrough because it wasn't what I was expecting based on the review I watched.
Don't even get me started on the moss-covered rotting logs over 50 foot deep ravines we're supposed to cross every five minutes. That's about the stupidest thing you can do in a survival situation.
But again these aren't complaints about the game as much as about the review I watched.
LOL I know, there's a whole wastebasket full of crumpled paper and some of the papers tacked on the wall looked pretty aged and dry, it drove me crazy that I couldn't use any of it.
Paper is usable as tinder IRL. Realistically I think it would have a good chance of being the best available tinder at the start since you spawn in a wet jungle and it would take you time to dry leaves. You're not going to find a ton of info online about how to start a primitive friction fire with paper because it's a weird combo (usually if you have dry paper available you have lighter/matches/rod) but I'm fairly certain it can be done and would be more likely to work than dead leaves you just picked up. The leaves would be better once you actually had time to dry them but they wouldn't be dry as soon as you picked them up.
