I made a short video some days ago....
i may do a full fight later since i have a new gamepad now

In the short video i show 3 attacks that are easy to punish and can be done in both phases

I have always found this to be one of the hardest fights because it is difficult to try and break his posture, you just have to chip his health away very patiently and it takes time.
The first encounter with the owl does not give you any chances to mikiri him, on the other hand if you try a strong/thrusting attack he mikiri-counter you 100% of the times. The second encounter is arguably harder but it gives you more chances to hurt him.

In general it is very hard to stand in front of him and parry/exchange like you would with Genichiro, he usually ends up getting the best of you when he starts using combos/ninja tools.

What I did, and I found most people do, (in the first encounter) is stay away from him as much as possible constantly circling in one direction (I usually go right) waiting for him to throw that shuriken followed by that jump attack, it is easy to dodge and he is vulnerable you can land 2-3 light slashes and then move back out...
There are other other attack where if you dodge succesfully, and provided that you are close, it gives you a chance to hit him but that's about it.
You basically rinse and repeat, chipping his healt away, it is not the most flashy approach but it works.

I made a full video few minutes ago . Should be uploaded in 20 minutes.

Owl is pretty easy once you stay relaxed and have patience and are okay with chipping his health away. All his attacks are highly telegraphed and easy to counter
There is basically nothing he can do to you once you stay relaxed and calm and have time.

I agree with dfromdub------------
The fight only becomes difficult when you get aggressive.
Ofc its doable when you are agressive but then you need to be really good.
If you have patience its one of the easier opponents------

Some important tipps for
2nd Phase:
Poison -> just move slightly backwards and its no problem
Going invisible -> just deflect the first 1-2 hits logged off and then log on target again

my main problem was that when he goes invisible i panic log on again and camera turns ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ;)
once i got comfortable deflecting some hits without being logged on target it became really easy.

I only fought owl a total of maybe 20 times so far but i am confident with a relaxed and calm approach i kill him first try 9/10 times.

I know its not the most manly or godgamer approach but its a save way of beating owl every time after some training

Edit:

and dont be too hard
It was a one take.

Did read your post , started Sekiro , choose owl fight and recorded it.
So ofc i was not really prepared for good commentating during the fight and its also not the best fight ever ;)

But you can watch all the attacks and try to see what i do against it.

Aggression is key when fighting enemies who can be forced into blocking, Owl is one of them. You can bully him into a corner with well placed R1s, and his options out of deflecting you are limited. Give him space to act and he will wreck you.

Well i dont think corner/wall cheesing by confusing boss AI is what a Sekiro player should aim for...
ofc its an easy method to win but do you really play/enjoy the game when you pressure a boss in a corner and than basically bug out his AI ?
Everyone has to decide for themself but for me the only fun in fighting bosses is to learn the movesets of them and being able to counter it

And besides that my video proofs exact opposite of what you say... (I am aware you have almost 200h in Sekiro and i have only 65h.... but doesnt change the fact that i can kill owl very safe by being not agressive and have video proof)
stay calm and relaxed and dont be aggressive and owl can do absolutely nothing to you.
All his attacks are slow and well telegraphed

Its when you are aggresive but not yet good enough when he will be a hard opponent

Well maybe thats just my oppinion but i think being aggressive is the wrong choice in many fights...
its just something someone started to say and many people repeated it because it sounds cool.....

After 65h and being able to 0 hit most bosses more often than not i personally
dont agree on the "being agressive part"
If you are very good -> being agressive ends fights faster
if you are a beginner being agressive will kill you more often than not

I'm not talking about cheesing ai with a tricky setup, and I do agree that you can only be truly aggressive when you know the match up. The aggression I'm talking about is not mindless spamming.

It's just that a lot of people forget R1 exists once they realize how powerful deflecting is in this game. Realizing that every enemy that can be forced into blocking has limited options out of deflecting you, makes the game way more manageable. Your potential for pressuring enemies in this game can't be ignored. You can make Owl back away from you, well placed R1s change the tide of battle.

Here's my take on the same boss:

thx for not being offended by my post ;) <3 its just that i think differently
And i like that you also posted a video.

I still stand by my point that your method saves time but is more difficult and therefore not good for beginners.
The video confirms my points more than it changes my mind ,)
you get poisoned 2 times and you survive 2 times only because of massive HP from campaign despite having 200h in the game.

being aggressive in 2nd phase has a high chance of getting you poisoned (which in your case doesnt matter because of massive HP you have from campaign playthroughs)

In a more passive approach poison is no danger at all.

And with being more aggressive you have a higher chance of getting hit , which in 1st playthrough has a high chance of being instant death.
with your massive HP is not too dangerous even when getting hit (you can take 3-4 hits)
but in 1st playthrough it is

I am sure you can delete owl by being aggressive when you have a good run.
no doubt.

But the point is we have a beginner with 19h who needs help to defeat owl.
telling him to be more aggressive in my personal opinion makes things a lot more difficult.

but well he can try both methodes
-> controlled reacting while staying calm and relaxed
-> trying to bring the fight to owl by forcing him into deflecting with r1

In the End now he has 2 Methods and both can work.

You are making the fight more difficult if you give enemies freedom to act when it's your turn. Constantly giving up your turn without realizing it is exactly what makes the game needlessly frustrating for a lot of people.
Sonnenbank Sep 20, 2021 @ 2:21pm
I think thats true for some bosses but not true for most bosses.

F.E
Lady Butterfly Fight is a lot easier when being aggressive
Genichiro is easier when being agressive
but thats about it imo.

When i first faced Owl i was prepared for a very long and hard fight.
But in my first few attempts i realized he has not many attacks and everything is slow and highly telegraphed.
all you need is patience and there is no way he can do anything to you.
Stand close enough to him that he starts an attack but far enough away that you have time to react to every of the very few attacks he can do

I had a total of only 11 attempts (and more than half of it were just learning movement instead of trying to win) before i beat Owl in my first playthrough and it was really a lot easier than i expected ;)
but well maybe you had different experience

i can get easy hits in by letting him break my posture on the end of any of his attack combos, he will go in for the deathblow, but you are able to dodge out of it and land a couple hits in after., its still a risky move though
Cuarto Sep 20, 2021 @ 3:13pm
Did you guys really just give him all information about the boss and even make video? The only advice he needs is git gud and maybe rest in real life if you tired.
Sonnenbank Sep 21, 2021 @ 2:48am
:) i wanted to make a video fighting owl anyways so this was a good opportunity
I now know how to make a better owl video after that first try but its also fun helping people.

Its not easy to talk while doing a fight in 1 take ;)
probably best Method is do the fight 3-4 times and take the best one ;)
then make the audio afterwards and mix it in .

But hey Raxis now that you got all the adivce and 2 videos its your time to beat OWL ;)

You can use firecracker to stun him for a moment, when he does the air flip you can dodge around him and punish him, you can also use the flame vent, for the second phase you can use contact medicine but is almost the same as the first phase.
