I can't say it's perfect when judging against ER or DS3, as it's missing a lot of 'volume' of these games - weapons, builds, clothes, side content.
But for what it is - a bite-sized From game without the ballast of the DS series or the need to convey tons and tons of lore to the player, which makes the game feel fresher in comparison - it is a masterpiece.
I remember launch day, it was the hardest thing I had ever seen up to this point, my progress on day 1 could have been measured in metres. I didn't like it.
Then it clicked somewhere around the Giraffe and I could finish it, but still felt very noob-ish. Stuck with it, did like 10 more playthroughs over the course of a year, was hyped for the Gauntlets, did the Gauntlets and now it's my ultimate 'I have a Sunday afternoon, let's rush a game real quick' - game.
Best From combat by a landslide, the most understandable story ( the other games have no actual story I find, they just have tons and tons of lore - interesting things did happen, interesting people did things, but we never experience it. The actual story of DS, for example, is 'a guy walked around killing almost everything while himself dying a lot' ), the fastest game, some of the best bosses ( it had THE best From bosses before ER was released, then rivaled only by the big guns like Gael, Friede or Orphan ) - yeah, Sekiro is as close to perfection as I believe such a bite-sized game can get.
You can always compare it to Wo Long, another title from a respected studio that sports more than a few similiarities. Then you at last will realize how crazy good Sekiro actually is.
I agree with almost everything you said, except for the part of Wo Long.
Wo Long is garbage, I tried it myself and due to bad optimization, I would never recommend the same way I do with Sekiro.
Sekiro provided me the experience of overcoming a challenging that doesn't require stats or "more souls" to farm to boost my character. Sekiro isn't about that, you have your sword and your hands and that's it. Fully intentional for the player skill to follow patterns and instructions, provinding the ultimate experience of combat.
The resolution is epic, the story is a dark fantasy inspired by many others out there like Berserk, but with its own originality and artwork. A truly amazing game that would give many people a hard time with your heart pounding as if it were a real deal fatal blow.
which is a shame....):
Have to agree. I would love to see the second game.
While a Sekiro 2 will never happen, I do hope the utilize the same formula and expand on it to make an even better game. And if they do, please make quick switching between combat arts an official thing. It would add to the creativity of combat.
I agree that switching combat arts and prosthetic tools would be a cool thing, I mean you can switch the tools but it takes one precious second after the animation.
Mid souls game? What are your arguments to sustain such statement?
