can't break the iron code

Hi there. I'm on my first playthrough, and after defeating Genichiro Ashina i went to talk to lord kuro. i decided to help him and break the iron code, but my character says to himself that i can't do it, and must protect lord kuro instead. What am i missing?

Nothing, because both options lead to the same thing in which you must protect him. Just keep progressing on.

It is the usual "But thou must" games love to use. To be clear though, there will be another opportunity to break the code, where your choice actually matters, so watch for that. For now, you must uphold the Iron Code and bide your time.
