Chained ogre grabs
How are you supposed to react to his grabs when you're close to him? Since one of his grabs is basically instant and the others are slow, and he can also perform any grab when you are near him

jumping usually works for me but i dont stand close and slap him. I dodge the kicks get two swipes then duck back. Use flame vent if you got it. If you didn't go to the Hirata estate and get it. Hes terrified of fire so you get some free swings in when hes set ablaze

you can dodge it if you time it right with invis frames, (he usually does the grabs when ur really close to him infront, if ur in a diff position he will use his other attacks accordingly so u can kinda manipulate it) or if ur really struggling just keep sprinting around his ass and bait his attack like the kick or the weird ass front jump on the ground, 2 attacks sprint and repeat, he has like 3 attacks that he drops on the ground and has to get up again and thats when u punish

It depends on which one. The main trick though is to just attack while strafing in one direction.
For the very short and quick grab (i.e. the one where he just grabs in front of him without moving his legs), that strafing method should work wonders, i.e. you should be able to just walk by it.
For the one where he lunges at you, he usually starts running (with a typical chained ogre grunting noise) and *then* grabs: try running around the grab, i.e. run 'around the trajectory' that he's running at you on.

Dodge sidways is imo the best way. The fast grab is indeed pretty fast tho so you need to be quick. The running grab most of the time will go past you when you just stay close and circle him.

I find it helpful to keep a bit of distance during the fight and only come close when there is an opportunity or you can use hook.

Don't forget to take full advantage when the green sign appears above its head. That means you can grapple attack it. But you have to "buy" or learn that art first. When you grapple to its head and get right up against its face, it will be stun long enough for you to use your flamethrower, or put in 2 to 3 hits and then back off. But the flamethrower will be more effective as it will deal damage as well as stunning it long enough for you to put in 5 hits max.

Thanks for all the tips, enjoying this game quite a bit right now.

Funny how that ♥♥♥♥♥♥ turns mid heavy attack - imo thats a NOGO in games like this.
Either this is dark souls like and EVERY animation has weight and is under the rules of attack commitment direction or we have a full gungho action game.
Also the place of the fight is several middlefingers from the devs to the players. Fighting him where he was chained can trigger the other polearm enemy to join the fight, u can get stuck at the big door in objects, he can throw u down the pit, the stairs are a nogo to fight, down the stairs would be better place BUT ofc there all the grapple points that will get triggered instead of the grapple to the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ head. BEcasue of that fight i got 3 more stages of that dragonrot malus. GG devs gg .|. .|.

Dragonrot adds basically nothing to the game, I use a mod to disable it entirely. Ogre is absolutely a horrible design choice for a first (mini-)boss, along with another one soon after, but afterwards the game really does fall into an amazing stride. The humanoid enemies are very fair and always weak to aggression and good deflecting. The beast/ogre enemies are a bit more Souls-like in how you approach them, which can be a bit of a stylistic mismatch in Sekiro but you get used to them. Also, fire wrecks them. And firecrackers wreck everything, for short bursts.

Thing with the fire is. at the point where the fire would really help in the fight (understand the boss) i ran out of the thingys that gives the ability.
Going for a stealth attack - from now on i will always try that first.
The next one seems even harder, requires getting rid of all the other enemies first - oh boy it will take AGES to do that boss

Always go for stealth attacks if all possible. Theres even a boss or two you can hit with a stealth attack if you know what you're doing. I believe nearly all mini-bosses can be sneak attacked as well. Here's a freebie since you'll likely struggle with the purple ninja men, when you return to Ashina Reservoir and go back to where you started the game theres one of those ninjas where you originally started (without your sword and still had your arm) instead of taking the path down to him you can get a free drop assassination on him by dropping in from a hole in the cave roof that Emma dropped the letter to you from.

Get mikiri counter as soon as possible as well. It opens up a lot of counter-play to many attacks including spear thrusts, many boss attacks, and even those purple ninjas have a forward kick that can be mikiri countered. The timing is a little different for each attack and one or two of them are either so nitpicky you have to be dead or they just can't be countered. Extremely useful move all the same

Thanks for the tips
I have the mikiri counter already - its really handy indeed
