Lightning Reversal -- Do you always take some damage?
If you don't want spoilers just don't read please since I need to mention a couple of things.

You learn about this skill early on at the Dojo in the palace, and I used it effectively vs the boss there (first fight at the top).

Jump > Block as lightning is cast > Attack after it's hit you

I'm now later in the game and certain purple enemies and dogs also can cast it... I feel like I'm doing the same thing but I'm taking small damage now? It's still better than taking the huge hit and Shock status, but I remember not taking any.

When I block I can hear the "clang" sound that makes me think I timed it correctly.
Are you supposed to hold block the whole time?

There are 3 ways to reverse lightning:
1. Jump and attack: there is chip damage
2. Use Mist Raven to launch yourself into air: no chip damage
3. Use Sakura Dance (a combat art only avaiable after completing the game once and completing one of the gauntlets of strength) no chip damage.
Thanks!
I see, perhaps I'm not remembering well but vs Gench I seem to remember taking no damage.
Does using Mist Raven still charge you for a counter lightning attack?

You may also jump, block mide (hold L1) air then attack. I think there is no chip damage then.

Yes but you take no damage. Just make sure not to use any direction button when using it against lightning becasue if you it will teleport you in that direction instead of upwards.

I feel like I just tried that on the fountainhead "dogs" and still took small hits... I remember holding down M2 (using KBM), then M1 after hearing clang (which will do the combat art midair normally) and successfully reflecting the strike back, but still took a small piece of damage... oh well.

The funny thing is I looked this up before I wrote this post because I was wondering if they patched or changed the game :D

I'll have to try again... Kind of tied up with Owl Father at the moment who has no such freebies :( --- except for the mikiri-able attack he does through his fireworks sometimes

block the attack, the reason you take damage is because you are hit by it

If you Parry it mid-air perfectly you won't take chip damage (except maybe in Genichiro fight cuz it's bugged there). If you only block it you will take damage just like when you are charmless and get hit during block. Majority of people just jump and mash attack. If you deflect it (block milisecond before it hits you) then you shouldn't take chip damage and can usually reverse it faster too
Not sure if you guys read my first post but I mentioned that:
1. I block as I'm jumping (tried both from ground and timing it -- I've heard the "CLANG" block confirmation sound) and THEN attack midair to successfully throw it back.
2. I've done it vs Gench without taking damage... but now in Fountainhead the dogs specifically seem to hit me. So I'm wondering if it's just the dogs, or if I'm missing a timing, since I'm definitely going for the block before attacking
