Two apes
Do you want to know how many emblems I wasted before I beat them? 100+ emblems! Probably close to 150. It's ridiculous. First phase is so easy, I usually did it with no gourds used. But two apes? Forget Ornstein and Smough, those two monkeys are the most annoying pair I've ever seen in my life. Heck, I'd rather fight Blade Bearer and Cannoneer in Code Vein.

If you want to know what I used all the emblems for - it's for the stupid terror aoe attack, because there's usually no time to jump away twice to escape it, and I had to deflect it with multiple umbrella uses. Then I also started using mortal draw to kill the second ape quickly.

In the end, that's how I did it. I just popped some sugars and attacked the brown ape as soon as it jumped down with three mortal draws (all I had before being out of emblems). Then I finished it off. Lucky me.

I know that headless ape on its own is a boring fight, but that's why you don't recycle bosses. Fromsoft just loves recycling bosses, which is cheap and boring.

Okay, rant over. Can't wait for some good boss fights, like Lady Butterfly or Genichiro.

How did you deal with the second phase? The moment I got one of the apes staggered, the second one attacked me. I had nearly no opportunity to do some damage to them. That's why I decided to finish the less tanky one as soon as possible,

Btw, I still have no firecrackers and no spear. But it's not like I need the spear in this fight, as the headless ape is easy with just a sword. But using firecrackers on the brown one would've made the fight trivial I guess.

How come you don't have firecrackers? Oh, you mean you haven't upgraded the firecrackers to the 3rd level?

I mean I have no firecrackers as far as I can tell. I think I've seen then at one of the merchants, but I decided that I can go without them.

Oh, I see. Fair enough. So, you are not going for the achievements then? Just to remind you, without the firecracker, this will block the upgrade path of quite a number of other prosthetic weapons, the umbrella (of which the final version is the fire one which a lot of people used to fight against Ishiin at Ashina) and the fan, the finger (of which the final one is malcontent), the fire pipe (of which the final version is the one that can shoot purple fire continuously which just slaughters the headless on land and the ethereal generals).
Edit: Sorry, I made a mistake. Not the 3rd level, it's the 2nd level, the long spark. Cast 5 of them on the brown ape and it will be dead. If not, its posture is totally broken by now. One more hit from Sekiro will be the end of it. Some people may say that this is not the proper way to fight. I think not. As long as it is not things like get right close by the door and keep swinging. Due to oversight, the blade can hit through the door or wall, now this is not the proper way. Miyazaki and his team designed both the firecrackers and the brown ape. The brown ape has very ow posture and the long spark firecracker can damage posture, though very small.

Thanks. I already figured out that I'm screwed as far as the upgrades go. I guess I'll pick up the missing tools at some point. I think it was a mistake to make the upgrades dependent on getting all the prosthetics. Overall, Sekiro has even less build flexibility than I thought.

Yeah, when I found out that FromSoftware has deliberately forced players to play the game again or the achievements, I was upset. But then again, I enjoyed the game and for me, this game has plenty of replayability. So, here I am, after one year break, putting myself through some torments again... hehe.
Even if you know how to back up saved game files, i.e. you will never die and as a result, lose half of your hard earned XP and gold, you still have to play a NG+ because there are only 6 lazulites in one game. To upgrade the prosthetic tool tree to the full, you need 12!!! Yeb, you cannot farm this lazulite stuff.

Something unclear about the firecrackers is that they have major cooldown on the stun effect but not the posture effect, so you can spam them on the second ape and get rid of her in like 10 seconds.

I thought this fight was super difficult, until I dropped a double Mortal Blade on them and nearly killed the second ape with it in one go. It's tough to get the freedom to go for a play like that, but the second ape actually goes down really quick.

Also, the terror attack has a huge tell on it, which starts long before the danger kanji appears over Wolf's head. You've beaten it now so it doesn't matter unless you play again (which I recommend but it's up to you), but that's something to keep in mind. In fact, every fight can be beaten without using spirit emblems, so I never used them when learning a fight, and I don't really recommend it. You learn the fight better and don't run out of something you're relying on.

All I did was jump when he does his diving attack and use the umbrella when he jumps and does the big overhead attack afterwards, that's all I did for the first phase. Second phase use the firecrackers on the brown ape when the brown one is dead do the exact same thing in the first phase and it's an easy enough fight.

I actually found the two apes easier than the first one because the attack patterns of headless were the same as the first time, so I had already perfected the parry/loaded spear. The other monkey was annoying at first but I found killing her right away after her jump attacks made it easier. Gaurdian ape probably took me like 30 attempts but the 2 apes probably only 3.

As I said, headless ape is trivial on its own. I guess my problem was the lack of firecrackers to deal with the second ape

If I recall correctly, my first win on this boss was thanks to Mortal Blade just ending the second ape's entire career. I don't think I relied on the firecrackers. Though, they're only 500 sen from an early shop, you really should do some backtracking to get the prosthetics you missed. Some of them can be really powerful!
