I used this method:
If you stay behind the boss as he attacks your puppet you can hold attack and stab his health down at range then back away so the puppet draws aggro again. The thrust attack should avoid your puppet.
If you're fast you'll get a deathblow before the puppet dies.
Phase two is a bit harder but dodging works well if you keep your distance and force him to charge you. He will telegraph most of his attacks giving you a chance for an attack and retreat before he recovers.
Stay out of his space or his attacks become relentless.
Chip him down and you'll get there.
Sabimaru is good if you play aggressively. Firecracker if you play defensively.
