Death removes xp and cash. You won't delevel you just fail to level up and you can purchase items that save you from losing money.
Death has a chance to make NPCs sick. If they're sick they won't offer certain quests, but you can still beat the game IIRC. There are items that remove sickness from all NPCs in one shot. The items become commonplace later in the game and trivial in NG+ as your skill grows.
Deflect (parry) timing is literally the only skill to master when you start out. Don't mash attack because attacks queue up and you'll get wiped while your attack queue winds down.
You will die. A lot. I spent 20+ hours losing to an old lady with needle fingers because I refused to fail. I hated every minute of it.
That's Sekiro. If that's not the ride you want then walk away.
EDIT: Don't start out thinking you'll play like the players who press enemies without taking a hit. You aren't that player and you won't be for a hundred hours of constant play or more. Don't kid yourself and you'll save yourself a lot of frustration.
Don't be afraid to just block sometimes. There's not much in the game that really punishes having your posture broken.
The headless are not worth it. They are awful.
I avoided all the phantom enemies until the end of my first playthrough when I was going for all of the items / prayer beads. Those things chewed me up in early game. The one in Ashina Outskirts was hard even in late game with the gourd and umbrella.
Agreed on the blocking. This will save you on your first playthrough.
If you give up the charm in NG+ you'll take chip damage along with posture which increases difficulty and punishes poorly timed deflections. Get those deflection timings down. ;)
If an enemy dose appear to be too much for you, maybe it's meant to be beaten later in the game, if this is your first walkthrough.
Don't forget to search for everything, there are certain items that will help you during any fighting.
If you're doing a very exhausting boss fight and you're feeling that you're losing focus, you can always pause the game. This isn't like DS, so the time in-game stops when you pause it. It could save you, sometimes.
Spectral enemies are meant for late game, but they have very rewarding prices if you defeat them. Make sure you begin the NG+ after you've beaten them.
And, as a final tip, GIT GUD. The only way to master this game is to study every pattern and how to efficiently respond (learn the parry timing, when it's better jumping or dodging etc etc). Don't give up too early, every enemy is beatable. Trust me
Step 2: Jumping. Dodging. Prosthetic Tools. Combat Arts. Consumable Items. These are all tools that will only solve specific problems, and if you forget to use them conservatively, you will die until you do.
Step 3: Hesitation is defeat. If you do not learn to act swiftly and decisively, you will die until you do.
When you've finally practiced a boss "dance" long enough to land all the steps the results can be a thing of beauty, like watching a well-choreographed sword duel from a movie. Be warned that it is a hard, long slog to get up to that point!
2. Stack Spirit Emblems as early as possible. They are pretty cheap but will cost more when you progress in the game.
3. Use everything in your advantage. A shinobi would know the difference between honor and victory.
Goodluck and have fun :)
It will make a big difference. I have this:

Try it out and thank me later :)
Seriously, though, if he learns Mikiri and deflect, I 100% agree with you. While he's learning those skills the run-like-a-coward-and-reset-the-encounter strategy will save him a lot of frustration.
This. I always thought "why should I want lose 10% money", but then I noticed that in this way I could save A LOT of cash 😂
