Press the button when the attack itself starts, not during the windup.

That is completely wrong I dare you to try this against juzoe with he's omega delay
Right advice is press button in attack is about to make contact with you.

No, Juzo just has a very long windup.

Different attacks have different active frame. After you take a hit or blocked the attack, try to remember the active frame of that attack then try to parry it next time. You just need to memorize each attack pattern and understand the differences from one another.

The safe approach, hold down the block button and note the timings of your blocks.

Here's what I did: Keep the block button held, quickly release and press to initiate a deflect. That way you will often at least get a block even if you fail the parry. Other than that you just have to learn each enemy and boss.

Well the best way longterm is to just learn the timings by try and error and getting a feeling through repitition.
A deflect makes a noticable yellow circle effect around your sword
experiemnt with timing earlier than you think and timing later than you think and see how it goes.

Keep trying deflects on the immortal NPC. Then try the deflects on that blue robe samurai in the antechamber at the Ashina Castle. When you manage to perfect deflect that blue robe guy right, try to deflect Genichiro at the memory fight. When you deflect him, pretty much you'll deflect anything in the game. The timing comes naturally ;)

Probably no the aswer you r looking for, but: you need to keep practicing. That's it.

But one thing that really will help you is what @Achivai just commented above.

Adjust the sound in the game correctly. This will greatly help you in memorizing the rhythm and timing for any enemy. The deflection sound is markedly different from the blocking sound.
