2 of the 40 Prayer Beads are locked behind one particular ending...
...that's not even the true ending. If this would have been the true ending (that requires a series of complicated steps to trigger) then I would have sorta understand it as a decision. The additional two Prayer Beads could have been a reward for players who managed to get this ending.

But locking these two collectibles behind one random ending? This just weird, not thought out game design. Especially because you can get and do literally everything else on the same playthrough. You can do all the side-quests. You can get all the unique items (terror boss items, special potions, etc.). You can get all of the mask fragments. Yet, you can only collect 38 of the 40 Prayer Beads? Why?

Please From Software, patch this out. I went for the Return ending but I would like to get to 20 Vitality too.

Memory 2 of Hirata. Done through purification ending.

As to the OP, it's a different memory and they needed minibosses and minibosses were meant to be where prayer beads are obtained from.

It's not ever going to be patched out, it's not ever going to change, FS has never done anything like that ever and will never do it. So get over it, run a super fast NG+ like everyone else. Welcome to FS games.

I am in the same boat. Send help please. (Please don't be locked behind the Shura ending that I just finished and moved onto ng+3)

it's apparently the ending that requires a whole lot of eavesdropping that you might not otherwise think to do.

While it is indeed locked behind the purification ending, it is possible to just continue the game and collect them all in one playthrough. The game does not end after the fight, you just get the item for the ending and move on. You'll decide then which of the three endings you get.

The only thing locked behind an ending is a skill you receive for killing another final boss.

Is this true? If so, how can you access memory 2?

If i remember correctly.. been a while and maybe too late of an answer xD

You have to side with Kuro and defeat Owl.
-> Eavesdrop on Isshin and Emma
-> Eavesdrop on Kuro from behind the paperwall
-> Rest
-> Talk to Emma upstairs and say "Yes"
-> Meet her at the old grave
-> Eavesdrop on Emma and the Old Man (Prosthetics Dude)
-> Confront Emma
You'll receive an item to enter the 2nd Hirata Memory

They're not locked behind an ending at all. You can visit the fragment and kill the two bosses - a stronger version of Jozou the Drunkard and a generic mini-boss level Ministry goon, and claim the two Prayer Beads no problem, without triggering the ending by killing the massively swole and woke Owl, so don't panic.

I blundered into it by mistake, so it's not like it requires massive planning ahead or anything either, just eavesdrop on Kuro while he's hanging near the incense, and then rest opens itself. It's possible it locks once you kill a certain boss, but still...nothing stopping you killing those two bosses before even entering the Fountainhead Palace etc etc.
