Also as said above, avoid going in to the well, you can get an easy stealth opener but he's a superfast swordsman in a very, very tiny space. The camera will mess you up more than he will....Capra Demon flashbacks....
I know of at least one other thing you can do with these guys as well and possibly a second for the first one.
I completed it by accident, figured that was the only event in the dungeon so went back and got a reward. See spoiler for complete details.
When you get to the monk temple, there is a lone crybaby sitting against the tree whining. Progress through the next few areas, get a white and red pinwheel. Give it to the cry baby, lure him to the dungeon (text command), head back to the dungeon.
Yeah, He asks you if you know where it's coming from and if you have the letter when you talk to him you can tell him you heard it by the dungeons.
does this quest line have two outcomes? one if I don't tell him about the dungeon and one where you do?
After luring the music soldier down there he gave me a note to go to some pond. Do you get the same note if you do it to the other guy?
Not entirely sure. Being FromSoft I imagine it does have multiple paths but since I'm on my first playthrough and sent him to the dungeon I don't know what that other path would be XD
