Im a lost boy, no idea where to go next.

Well I just obtained the blade and went back to Kuro. They were talking about some tree that died and thats it.

then I guess your options are probably twofold:

1) the well you started at

2) the valley below the serpent shrine.

I've done that to. And it leads me to a dead end with a wooden platform sticking out of a rock. I think there is suppose to be a snake at the bottom but there isnt.

which are have you not completed, go there. This game is more clear than lets say dark souls 1

Nothing is at the start. From what I read online I think im suppose to kill the snake but I cant find it anywhere. Not at sunken valley area where you are suppose to drop attack it.

did you swim all the way to the back of the start bit and then grapple up the wall?

Snake doesn't actually appear until you walk on that bridge in sunken valley.
