Hmm good question. I don't know about a good place per say, but not shying away from mini-bosses does help because these enemies have varies movesets and you need to get the timing down to beat them.

'cause I'll agree that the dummy doesn't really help much to get the deflect timing down. Teaches you the basics well, sure, but in a real situation his attacks are way too freaking slow to truly help you against faster enemies. My trick was really to just fight every mini-boss I encountered and eventually I got the timing mostly down.

Heriata estate Is where i Perfected it. Drunkard basically requires it with him and all his minions.

Edit: Gun fort really makes you use the parry button though if your anywhere around that area.

there is one castle waypoint that has a normal sword guy and a badass spear guy right next to it, you can stealth kill the normal guy and then try not to get rekt by spear guy.

Thanks for the inputs. I end up practicing it by fighting against the Corrupted Monk lol.

There's a mini-boss enemy in the game called "Centipede-Giraffe" or some such. He's kind of like the boreal knights from Dark Souls 3, all hunched over and super fast attacks. He's good to learn to parry with and also good to learn how to transition from parry to jump-counter when he launches his unblockables.

Once he dies he dies though so if you want to use him from practice, don't kill him.

Lady Butterfly is the easiest and best and later in the game when you head to the castle for the first time the mini-boss (blue samurai with just 1 unsheath attack) before genichiro. Their attacks are easy to predict and you can learn to time your parrys. i trained on lady butterfly for like 1 hour and it worked perfectly, nearly killed her without using any poitons. after that fight the game was a bit easier to play and by that time you get even more practice because you learned the basics. only problem i still have (i am at the final boss) is the mikiri counter. i just cant use it properly.

centipede bosses are awesome to counter practice with because they almost literally posture break themselves in one combo string.

Hard to really say or get out what you think you want to get out of this idea. Each enemy type has different moves, so your timing will change. Especially for Mini-bosses/Bosses.

You are absolutely expected to die over and over and over and over on them to learn their moves.

To quote Dark Souls 2: "You will lose everything. - An augur of darkness. Your past. Your future. Your very light. None will having meaning and you wont even care. By then you'll be something other than human. - A hallow. Like a moth to a flame your wings will burn in anguish. Time after time. For that is your fate."
In your basement

There's a guy at mibu village bonfire that kicks a lot and poisons too (he's dressed in purple). Pretty good practice against annoying attacks. If you want to practice your mikiri counter there's a spear guy at ashina reservoir.

Castle, Antechamber, the blue-robed ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. You can aggro them one by one, have lots of hp and poise, their movements are easy to read. They combo, they kick, they thrust, easy to read calm fights. I have practiced there a lot. Also they drop good sen and loot.

You have to learn perfect deflects (and implicitly perfect dodges - though mistiming those is notably more damaging =) ) for each enemy type really. So just spend some time with each new type as you go.

Attacking twice seems to bait out the enemies attack. So I attack twice, then hold block and learn what their counter attacks are.
