The enemies that the Tengu of Ashina tells you to kill have bamboo hats. Why doesn't the loaded axe break them like it does for shield guys?

Hmm... it did for me. You sure you're hitting them head-on?

The axe works on them, thats how I beat them. They are decent to farm at that stage in the game too, get about 80 or 90 xp for each one of them.

It doesn't work at times though. In the case it doesn't work first time I just hit them with the followup attack.

If you get them from a side angle or something you won't break the hat, make sure they're facing you and trying to block you

How do I know if they're trying to block me when their hats are so big I can't really see their swords?

Just swing at them, if you start hitting the hat head on then administer Axe.

I have had the axe not break the hat on these little midgets. Also how are they a threat to a real shinobi? How is that little straw hat giving them any sort of protection?

I should be able to pierce through with a stab move.

It's weird. Those "rats" in particular I had the axe break all their hats. But every other time I've encountered this type of enemy elsewhere in the world, the axe never breaks their hats.

Believe you can actually miss the attack, you do the attack to late you hit behind them.
