Just fought him again and used 10 of my spirit just spamming the spear, literally nothing happened

The game makes it fairly clear in several places that the spear is what you're supposed to use against heavily-armored foes, to remove their armor. Literally throws an enemy named "Armored Warrior" at you (not too far away from where you probably first learned that), against which the spear does absolutely nothing.
Common sense isn't your strength, hm? The guy literally destroys every wall, your death blow pushes him bacl. If you fail to connect the dots it is not poor game design.
