Unsure if that was what happened, after resting I jumped to my death again & it was the same thing.
So the game should be called "Shadows die twice, unless they fall to their deaths then they only die once but it's counted as twice".
Always when you fall off a ledge into oblivion you just lose some health.

haha, no not my first game from them.
If you fall - you will just lose health. However, if your health is low to begin with when you fall - the game will treat it as a full death (No rez possible) and will reload at last statue with half your exp and money gone.
Do note that the only rez that goes away by this method is the statue one (i.e. if you rest at a statue the rez will come back). If you have the 2nd rez filled (The one that requires enemy death-blows to fill up) - that rez will still be there.
