Opinion on Whirlwind Slash
I'm trying to find a use for this skill. It doesn't seem to do much offensively. Is anyone using this effectively? I'm thinking of trading it for another skill. The one that closes the distance quickly. Thank you.

It doesn't cost anything, does the same damage as normal hits per hit (a lot of high combo moves do very little damage per hit) and hits multiple enemies.

Obviously a lot of the later moves are ultimately better but it's in not bad.

It's useful for the first phase of a late-game boss. Still not necessary. Only two attack skills that I'd recommend are Nightjar Slash Reversal and Ichimonji (not double). I'd still keep Whirlwind slash to get to the spririt emblem passives, though.

It's useful since you step forwards as you use the attack, and because it has a much shorter windup than ichimonji. It lets you hit when the basic attack would whiff but ichimonji would take too long. There are also certain bosses like ashina elite who will keep backstepping away while you spam it at them and chew through their healthbars. I also find it handy for killing weak and easy enemies who are attempting to gank me

It works wonders against those annoying bugs jumping all over the place. Usually gets rid of several at once - nice to farm emblems (not that it would be necessary though).

It comes out fast, has a very wide swing, and does a little damage through block so it's an easy way to whittle down bosses health to slow their poise regen.

great tips guys. Let me ask a follow-up questions then...There is another skill called night star slash. It closes the distance with a little damage too. How are these two skills different? They sound like the same thing now.

Nightjar slash's primary purpose is to close distance quickly, kind of like a running attack that you can use from a standstill (and the 2nd version is a straight upgrade that lets you move forward or backward to get in or out quickly). It moves you farther than whirlwind, doesn't have the aoe, and the attack comes out at the end of the animation instead of the beginning (the reverse slash is the opposite).

It does what it says on the tin: It's most effective against multiple enemies. Against single targets, a lot, if not all of the other skills are better.

I think you mean Nightjar Slash. One thing to consider is that damage from all attacks skills is pretty mediocre. Therefore, you should really choose an attack skill based on it's utility. Nightjar Slash Reversal is unrivaled in it's ability to quickly close and create distance. Ichimonji is useful because it reduces your posture damage. Everything else is inferior to those to skills from my experience outside of very specific circumstances. You might pick up the prosthetic skills simply because you they don't occupy your skill slot, but it's not necessary.

The skill have good cleave. Useful for attacking multiple enemies at once (dogs, bugs etc), assuming they don't interrupt you.
