Anti-Air Deathblow in Box
I didn't kill the "rat" who sells you the Umbrella, but after getting the Mortal Blade, the Anti-Air Deathblow was in the box. I haven't bought the Umbrella yet, and now I'm worried I won't be able to.

The box is there specifically so that you can't miss important items. In other words, you missed the "real" opportunity but instead of the game locking you out for the rest of the playthrough, you just buy it at the box instead.

That makes sense, but is there any way for me to get the Umbrella now?

Yes, you go to the offering box at the Sculptor's Shine (next to the training guy) and buy it there. If it's for whatever reason not there, then that means you can still obtain it out in the world.

Yeah, the only thing that was in the box was the Anti-Air Deathblow. But I thought you got that from the same "rat" guy.

The tool should be on the ground where Blackhat used to be on the second trip to Ashina Castle.

...I'm going by the wiki here, because I don't think I've ever seen it in the box.

Then that means the rat guy is no longer available, due to you progressing through the story too far for him to be there anymore. It's a failsafe to make sure you can always buy key items.

So I went back to wear the rat guy was, and there was a big splatter of blood. I found the Umbrella prosthetic through a hole in a roof nearby, surrounded by more blood.

So I'm assuming the rat dies in the story.
