Random deaths against regular enemies (usually because I'm being a moron) really cost me but 30% is only ever a really handy 'oh nice'.
Bosses as you say, it doesn't really matter because once you know its there you can either fall back or only ever engage knowing you won't lose anything cos you just got a skill point and spent all your money.
It's nice to sometimes recover your money and XP, but there comes a point where you'll start instinctively spending/banking it before new/problematic areas. (You can buy bags of money from merchants, which technically stores your money and prevents it from being lost) Just useful if you happen to be carrying a lot of money on you.
I've only had one time where a really significant amount of money and exp was saved because I got lucky and got unseen aid
Make sure you spend your money and your skill points before a boss fight. I usually will buy the gold sacks for insurance.
If you have 2 skill points and need 3 for a skill point. Do a little grinding to level to 3 and get the skill point and then go to the boss fight.
If you die, you only lose half of your progress towards the next one. You can’t lose points you’ve earned.
