It's manipulative, and made me feel bad at first, but it actually kinda turns out well for Kotaro. The merchant tells him that they're "preparing the bodies for burial" as a reason to strip and collect their weapons and armor. Obviously that's a lie, but Kotaro is still cleaning up bodies, digging them proper graves and giving them their last rites as a monk. He finds fulfillment in this, so I don't feel too bad about it
You just killed Kotaro indirectly don't feel good. During the invasion if you go back to the merchant you will find him and Kotaro dead on the ground, before he dies the merchant will give you an item that gives you 10% discount when purchasing from merchants.
Best way is to spirit him away to the illusion hall as the other 2 options will kill him anyway.
Should have checked him every now and then since he upgrades his ware if you help him ear drop the soldiers to find out what they want, but hey there's always NG+, beside he isn't tied with any achivement so it's good.
If you've completed his quest line, you find him dying, and if you talk to him he tells you about how he saw some soldiers chasing a kid (almost certainly Kuro) and he wanted to do something heroic for once, so he saved him.
