It does kinda feel like a step back. Adding in variety for weapons for people to use wouldn't take anything away from people who just wanna play the exact current version of the game, as they can choose to just only use a sword.
There's even a way to design it so extra skill points aren't required to level up multiple primary weapons. So game balance wouldn't shift at all for people who just wanna stick to a sword.
Imagine if a new FPS game came out and there was only 1 type of gun and no customization.
"It's not Dark Souls 4. So don't complain about the gun and cosmetics variety being zero."
Or an MMORPG.
"One class. One weapon. No stats. No cosmetic changes. It's not Dark Souls 4. Deal with it."
From Software just gave us a badass Legend of Zelda game.
jesus christ i hated nioh because of all the gear stuff. play the same levels over and over for side missions then ♥♥♥♥ with my loot after and go for some more repeated levels.
No it is not a step backwards. there are 5 skill trees and a prosthetic upgrade tree. Most of the skill trees have to be unlocked through quest and exploration. Same for prosthetic upgrade materials. Exploration also rewards you with beads which can increase your vitality and posture.
Let's not ♥♥♥♥ around: 80% of players in DkS were using the most broken build they could imagine every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ time. Let's not pretend there was any kind of variety. And I'm saying that from the PoV of someone that played a STR/FTH build in every DkS (and FTH was basically crap in DkS II and III... still took that path knowing it wasn't optimum). Sure it is nice to have options but 95% of the situations have a quality build as the optimum in DkS III (beside nameless and Oceiros where FTH is actually optimum).
Same goes for weapon and armor. Yeah nice... I've found a weapon! Oh... Yeah... It's crap... Well... I guess I'll just stick to my Lothric Knight UGS then (again, how many viable FTH weapon do we have in DkS III? 1.5 if you count Wolnir sword as half viable... for INT? Basically one, maybe two).
SO, in DkS III you basically have to pick build variety OR weapon variety, you can't have both if you want something viable.
Also action games featuring one primary weapon type are nothing new, "oh noes i can't wield a Dragon Slayer or Buster Sword in Prince of Persia, it's a ♥♥♥♥ game!11!!"
Yup. The Witcher 3 says hi! It was such a bad RPG. /s
