He normally use thrust pretty often but if you attack he also does normal attacks you can deflect.
Also use his sweep to give him some direkt hits when you jump on him.
Also he does a move where he spins his spear some times before one big hit. You can directly hit him while he does that.
Oh and use the samurai as a puppet. With a bit luck he almost finish the first health bar on his own.
One of my favorite minibosses, both of them.
His moveset takes some time to learn, but other than that... I think the biggest problem is that he regenerates his posture very quickly and so - requires to get some vitality damage in, which is actually quiet hard if he decides to not just do thrusts ever.
Deflect, deflect, deflect... You can get a hit or two in when he helicopters his spear around.
They are also the only enemy to counter a mikiri counter. After you mikiri him he will make wolf stagger by pulling the spear up together with wolf.
After that they do one out of two possible actions: they either take a step back to launch a new attack or go for overhead slam that - if deflected - causes them to lose their balance instead allowing to get vitality damage on their ass. Great timing to use some powerful vitality-damaging move like one of the combat arts or more powerful prosthetics such as axe or maybe even a fully-charged flamethrower.
I also really like the fight.
Since i had nothing better to do i recorded a nice fight.
I know not many ppl will see it but maybe its some help for OP.
You can actually interrupt many of his attacks, the sweep and even thurst if you are close enough, but the thurst really should better be used for mikiri counter.
The undo's spiritfall is just for better view so that wolf is not transparent

The trick to him is (from my perspective): after you get mikiri counter off, BE READY TO DEFLECT. He may or may not follow up with an attack. If he doesn't - oh well, get him next time, wolf, if he does - deflect that ♥♥♥♥ and THERE'S your window to get several shots in. Rinse and repeat until he dies (I'm not implying that it's easy, mind you, but it is consistent once you get the timing down).
Also, yeah, as someone pointed out, you can stealth hit him before the fight starts.
I hope that helps.
For the 2v1 fight, first do a backstab on the Seven Spear guy. Then, run over to the wall where there's a gun guy sitting there, backstab him, do that bloodsmoke move to stun the swordsman, and switch to the weapon buff art before backstabbing him. The spear guy is now on one life and you have a buff
Probably he burned to death (AI is dumb) because I see no other way to how he would have died, then it was just me and the mini-boss there, but yes, both a the same time I was suffering.
I think I was getting horrendous RNG, while also being a noob. And as soon as he started scaring me out of trying to deflect, it probably lowered his chance of thrusts. I've been kind of a pansy about the whole thing.
Until then my old Dark Souls reflexes were still showing and getting me in trouble - like attempting to dodge some of his attacks, including the swipes. I was getting SO upset about it, that i literally screamed outloud "THIS IS NOT DARK SOULS, STOP ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DODGING YOU PIECE OF ♥♥♥♥!" *slaps himself*
I think the spear-bro is the first enemy that forces you to learn dealing with enemies that have both swipes and thrusts and use them equally frequently, so you have to learn to distinguish between the two and deal accordingly. There was a lot of times i tried to mikiri when it was a swipe or tried jumping when it was a thrust.
I got so upset about this guy that i skiped him until i got at least +1 health boost and +1 damage boost. And also after the core combat gameplay finally clicked in my brain.
After that i came back and finally fought him properly. Deflected everything, jumped over swipes, mikiri'd all the thrusts... And dear god was it fun!
One of my favorite mini-bosses in the entire game, i wish i could fight all 7 of them...
seven ashina spears doesnt mean 1/7 but like all 7
I always asked myself if gyobu masataka oniwa is also a member of the seven spears and the just not mention it :)
