Where the hell is the damn fort key?

You know, one of my biggest pet peeves in any game is running into dead ends. I'm at the gun fort and I can't find the key to the door so I can move on. I've looked at a few Youtube videos showing the key to be located in Kuro's room in the castle, yet its blocked off for me. I either missed some obscure quest I was not clearly advised I had to do or this game is broken.

It's in the library. You need to go see Isshin about the mortal blade then go back to Kuro. He should've opened that area by then. The key is there.

I've searched far and wide for this Isshin dude, and I can't find him. I have no idea whats going on. The developers must be scattered brained or something, because the quests are all over the damn place. At no point do I recall ever being informed of a mystical sword I had to get or having to speak to anybody just to get a damn key to a door. As far as I can tell, I have completed every single relevant objective there is.

You sure you exhausted all their dialogue? (Talk option.)

Isshin is in the guard tower nearby. Exit Kuro's room through the window leading to the front of the castle, looking to the big stairs where the castle idol is, then follow the smoke signals on the roofs. It should be close on the right.

If Isshin is not there, you'll see a letter with a hint to where he is. (He's near the vendor that's close to the castle gate idol, indoors in a tower.)

You'll need to talk to him about rats before he moves to the guard tower (you don't need to conplete the mission he gives you for this to happen).

Did you talk to Kuro? Did he led you to that small window which he opens up? That's the way to Isshin's room.

If you did that and can't find Isshin in his room, that means you might have missed his first encounter, you were supposed to meet him much earlier if you just looked around.
If you can't find him in his room in the castle, go talk to Emma, she'll tell you to go to the arena where you fought that horse guy with a large spear.
Now, instead of going left to the idol (as you would normally do) go right up the large stairs into that huge building. He's there.

After you talked to him, he should give you a text for the Ashina skills.
Now, go back to the castle, and go find Isshin's room. He should be there.

All of this is easily findable if you actually take your time and don't just needlessly skip dialogue and dialogue.
