Is the " Phantom Kunai " upgrade worth it ?
Hi all. I've stumbled upon this upgrade which is being sold by the guy who tells you secrets, in the area just before the one with the chained ogre. It supposedly upgrades the shuriken thrower, but it costs 3k sen, which is quite a fortune. Do you know if this item is really worth hoarding the money ?

Ty in advance. Cheers !

for me it was rather useless. It looks cool but its not that effective.
But on the other hand you will have s**ttons of money left in the game and you will likely get it anyway.

But you dont need it too soon. If you have more important things to by, get them first.

You can't make use of it right now if you just arrived at the area. Learn how the upgrades work first, and buy it, once you can upgrade to it, at which point the price is not going to be that much of an issue anymore either.
So no, its not worth hoarding the money, but it is worth looking at once you can make use of it and afford it with relative ease.

Probably not worth gunning for, but if you're having a lot of trouble with a boss, using up all your emblems on phantom kunai is a way to drain a sizeable portion of a healthbar at range.
Won't be OP for anything, but it can help skip a phase you hate.

In my case, it is useless. All the way to NG+7 and even in Demon Bell playthrough

Yep, found it not very good either but I like the Spiral Spear despite reading some say spear prosthetic is no good except against Guardian Ape.

It can do a surprising amount of damage when fully charged. I used it a lot on my first playthrough. You can use it to cheese the last phase of a boss fight. I`d get the boss down to about 25% of his health bar and finish him off with fully charged phantom kunai.

Why don't people who want to know specific things just go to wiki... Its damage is only very slightly greater than normal upgraded Shuriken AND it costs TWO spirit things to use so its total damage is actually way way worse.

I find it really shame how meh the upgrades are. They just feel like small damage bonuses with some extra elemental damage depending on the upgrade but I wish there was changes to the actual functionality which then would affect your playstyle.

Because the wiki for this game isn't great and besides, it isn't a substitute for people's narrated experience. And I like chatting with actual players.
It works well for the intended purpose of the shurikens, picking off weak enemies from a distance. The magic butterflies will damage enemies even if they are blocking.

Though, it gets completely replaced by the lazulite shuriken which does the same damage while blocking, but at a lower emblem cost. That’s endgame, though.
