Isshin Ashina and Isshin Sword Saint, who is more difficult?

In my opinion, Old Isshin is more difficult than Isshin SS. His fire attack can't be reverse like lightning attack. And he is the only boss in the game can dogde and counter. Also a grab move at close range which sometime i can't reaction quick enough.

btw, Emma make Genichiro looks like child's play, why doesn't she drop a memory????

That's what I thought at first but after a bit of practice, you can posture kill him too fast to be an issue, his attacks are fast but easily punishable such as the retreating spear slash; dodge under it for a free 2 hits, his thrust is easily baitable for a mikiri, loads of room to retreat and heal, each deflect usually leaves him open.

I fought ashina isshin first though so it could just be me being used to the game by then.

I cant really judge too since i went the way of the severance ending first time and i got a lot better since then till i did the shura ending.

Id go with the bigger battlefield, makes it easier i think.

In my opinion, Isshin Sword Saint is harder.
Isshin Ashina is not hard once you know his attack pattern, and his fire attacks in the 2nd phase are slow and can be stopped easily with firecrackers.

That's kind of a biased opinion because imo, none of the bosses are really hard if you know their attack patterns and how to deal with them.

Fire Isshin has a small arena while Sword Saint loves his pistol.

I've only fought Isshin in NG+, but I felt his final phase was definitely harder than Sword Saint's final phase. Sword Saint's main attack, the lightning, is also his greatest weakness. Isshin doesn't have quite the same weakness. And his AOE attack can be brutal.

Actually the fire is easy to deal with. Get a combat art that can interrupt, (Ashina Cross, charged Dragon Flash, charged Praying Strikes Exorcism all work, I would bet charged Ichimonji would work too but I haven't tried it). When he does that fire+ One Mind combo, just interrupt the starting move. same thing with the charged fire wave. About the third special move, the one the is two fire swings, and the first one looks like an Ichimonji... just walk around him then punish with combat art (make sure to use a combat art becasue regular attacks will lead to him counterattacking with a rather fast horizontal slash and a perilous fire sweep) .Alternatively the One Mind and the his fire waves can be deflected by Suzaku's Lotus Umbrella.
As for Sword Saint Isshin, his most dangerous move in the last phase is not the lightning, but his 2 diagonal windslashes. The best counter is to dash through the first then deflect the second in melee range but that can be very risky as it requires good spacing and timing, so running sideways may also work depending on your distance from him.

I definitely found Sword Saint waaay harder than old man Isshin Ashina.
Ishin Ashina's first phase is fairly easy, and his most dangerous fire moves in phase 2 are all super slow, very telegraphed, and easy to sidestep around. With the exception of the One Mind combo, the counter to all the fire attacks was generously sidestepping behind him.

While Sword Saint Isshin's first phase (not Genichiro, he doesnt count) was really easy, I've beaten him twice and still haven't fully figured out his spear phase yet. He's super aggressive and can keep comboing attacks wildly into each other until you parry them or die. I always feel like I beat that phase without seeing its full potential.

Using firecraker for that is a waste of spirit emblems. use a combat art.
