Do you need to kill Headless to progress?
Okay so, I am at what I think is probably the first headless enemy in the game. Found it in some cave in a ravine near a giant snake skin. It was obvious this was a gimmick fight since normal attacks do nothing to its posture. I looked online and found out you basically need to have a Divine Confetti to kill it. I have a total of one.

I don't want to jump down there, pop my only divine confetti, get killed, and end up being stuck forever, but it feels like this is the only way to get to the next area. Did I miss a hidden or maybe obvious path somewhere and am taking a detour... or is this fight a required fight at this stage in the game?

Not really.

One or two of them guard prayer beads but you could just rush those if you want.
Defeating them only gives you spiritfalls which are just reusable candies with shorter duration.

Okay, thanks. Was a bit worried since this fight suddenly felt so much harder than all the ones before it lol.

I didn't kill one headless or shichimen until very end of the game aftet all other bosses/upgrades. Really made for a trivial fight at that point, but honestly that's what I wanted. Headless are terrible enemies.

always good to get as much done as possible in first playthrough. yes the spiritfalls aren't super useful but still nice to collect.

man, that sucks that I have to ignore them. If they didn't deal ridiculous chip damage, they'd both be dead by now in my playthough.

Also, if you have the Lilac Umbrella and the skill Projected Force, you don't need confetti.

At one point very late in the game you'll be able to buy unlimited confetti, too.

Or use blue umbrella counter attack.

Each headless give a unique item that get fairly useless later in your progression.
They are a nice challenge though.

Yeah any item that requires spirit emblems to use are completely worthless, IMO.
