Have you never seen any movies/series about asian mystical stories? It's pretty much what the game tells you with that tool and what happens when you use it on Kotaro. In fiction it usually means you get brought to a spirit world. For example the realm of gods or realm of the dead.
In reality that saying probably came into existence when people disappeared due to unexpected death or other reasons. In the past when there was no explanation for a dissapearance obviously they were "spirited away". It was mostly superstition - a way for people to escape a reality they don't like or don't want to accept.
