What's the deal with that giant snake in the caves?
How am I supposed to kill it, if indeed that's possible? To put it another way, how do I get the deathblows to show up?

The snake has 2 heads. One hunts above and the other guards the cave below. By killing the upper head, the lower one is trapped in the cave forever. You cannot kill this head. You can use Puppeteer on the monkey to get into the temple it guards, or use Mist Raven. The path is hidden in the dark but there are ledges below along the left side of the cave. The temple holds the dried fruit and a 2nd entrance to the Depths.

Puppeteer? Mist Raven? What monkey are you talking about? This is my VERY first playthrough, and I'm still learning the ropes. Basically, I have no knowledge of the things you're saying, or where they are.

Listen, when you reach the snake, if you sprint towards it and hug the leftmost side of the bridge, you'll notice a grapple point. If you're quick, you can jump to avoid the snake's thrust and then use the grapple to move past it. Just beyond the snake there is a small temple area that leads somewhere else. Try it out.

Puppeteer is a ninjutsu you get after beating the memory boss of Senpou Temple. Mist Raven is a prosthetic you get from the 3 Story Pagoda at Hirata Estate.

You can see the monkey cowering down to the left past the snake.

You may be exploring and wandered into this area early.

you cant kill the snake , you need to sneak past him when he is not looking at you ,
when your inside the cave use the grass as cover to sneak past intil you get to a little tent ..
go inside that ..stay there and when he looks in at you deatblow his eyeball ...run to the other end
over a tree branch look for a grapple hook point above the wall ...job done

You can't kill him that early in the game. Later on after getting some secret items, it also unlocks the best ending for the game the path that includes the death of the snake.
All you can do now is gouge its eyeball.

if you dont know what those two things are then i dont know how you even got to that area. mist raven is in hirata estate and puppeteer is at the monks place. Basically you earn them both very early into the game.

get puppeteer from killing folding screen monkeys, go to senpou temple mt kongo first idol, jump down about 3 ledges and youll see a monk on a bridge, go left. there will be a sedge hat guy next to a crank mechanism, sneak attatck him use puppeteer ninjutsu he will crank the machine and make a path with a kite. progress thru senpou temple until you get to the area before shugendo idol there is a big tree impossible to miss. grapple it, grapple the kite, jump off the ledge you go to towards the right and mash grapple until you hit another ledge. go into a cavern to get another idol, go left from there and drop down a bit until you see a cliff with a single log jutting out, walk onto the log, target the snake below, jump and plunge. you will definitely kill him and he will be gone for good, and youll get a special key item.

To everyone who reads this, there's no need to continue posting. I found the answer from an online walkthrough, and I'm now just outside Ashina Castle.

Because you guessed wrong where he's at. That aside mist raven is very easy to miss. It was one of my last prostetics to get when I decided to finish some quests before the last few bosses.
