How to tell a deflect from a block?
I noticed lately that I have not been deflecting as much as I thought. When the swords make contact, is there a way to distinguish a deflect from a block? A different sound? A different animation?

Deflect = CLANG

Block = ding
Also, a deflect produces a higher pitch sound.

Will this be universal? What if they have a bat or a kick from an ogre? Same two sounds? That would be nice.

The sounds won't be identical for everything, but the deflection sound will always be distinctly higher pitched. It's also accompanied by a brighter spark on your sword as the attack lands. The same rules actually apply for your own attacks, you can tell when an enemy is about to counter attack when your own swing is met by the higher pitched sound and brighter spark.

There are sparks when its a deflect.

I also look for sparks to know when an enemy deflects my attack, it's a good sign to tell me to defend- this works amazing for the lady butterfly fight incidentally.

Good stuff guys. I'm gonna clang and spark the F out of these guys! Thanks for being here to help!

any melee weapon attack and kicks can be deflected (atleast most do, dont know about the ogre), also as a little fun fact you can deflect dog attacks to get a deathblow.

they should sound the same from what I know, but dont usually deflect the hammer the big enemies have so dont quote me on that

Also for more help when youre attacking someone when hes blocking just do three attacks as the third one the enemy will deflect and try to counter.

Block produces sparks, too

Deflect has more, though, and also has a shockwave form the impact that you can see. It'll look and sound somewhat different depending on what you deflected (deflecting blades has a brighter color and a higher pitched clang, deflecting punches, kicks, etc. has a duller sound and color).

For a video example:

Watch the fight with Genichiro (starts around 0:45). The first attack with his bow I deflected, and the second attack I blocked.

If you time your deflection well, Sekiro and the enemy’s sword will clang, and also there will be a spark

IMO... the easiest way to tell is IF you purchase the skills under the Ichimoji tree that deal posture dmg to opponent on Parry. If it's a deflect you WILL do posture dmg. If not no posture dmg happens to them BUT you take huge posture dmg.

IF you decide not to get those skill, then the sounds.

This is another way of saying... Force yourself into a situation where whomever you're fighting has a flurry type of attack and spam the parry button. Watch their posture dmg go up... You are DEFLECTING vs blocking.

That centipede miniboss is perfect to find out.

If you parry you should no take posture damage and enemy should.
If you block you take posture damage and enemy not.
With some Bosses even parry will give you some posture damage, as far as remeber/know.

parried hits still deal posture damage, they just can't break your guard, so as long as you don't mess up any deflections, your posture doesn't matter.
