The story gets explained later on (kinda) in the alternate memory
the swords don't look anything alike though. The one that stabbed him was a straight edge. Owl's has a CURVED katana
You think he's compensating for something?
Owl is a pretty cunning guy, he could have used another person's blade to cover his tracks
I also don't see that big of a difference between the sword he uses in Hirata Estate and the one in the battle against Owl.

You mean when you go BACK to Hirata estate and fight him in the same room as Lady Butterfly?
I actually haven't managed to unlock that yet, but I've heard about it. I should probably start using the wiki - but I don't wanna give away stuff I haven't discovered yet. XD
Yes, this all happens after the endboss in the memory that can be unlocked with the second bell charm you get.
IMO a lot less of the small details in Fromsoft games are as deliberate as people think. Still, it could be deliberate and yet something as straightforward as "a straighter sword looked better in the shot we wanted to frame".
Yeah, well as you said, quite a lot of the smaller details in FromSoft games are intentional.
