Sekiro rewards Doom-style (float like a butterfly, sting like a bee) agression.
Sure, you always have to be atleast a bit aggressive in this game, but with Genichiro(Way of Tomoe), you have to be especially aggressive. If you do it right and deny him any break, he won't have the chance to start one of his combos that could one-hit you if you aren't in NG+.
A good chance to get a couple of hits in is, when he starts running around you in circles, because then he isn't blocking and it wil hit him right out of his attack.
If you, like me, don't have quick reflexes to deal with the reflect lightning BS, just quickly 2x-3x dodge to your right when he casts any kind of lightning. He won't be able to hit you.
Unlike the others say, the third phase is by far the hardest for those without quick reflexes. I was incredibly happy when I finally beat this moron on my 20th-30th try which took over 2 weeks, I tried him for 2-4 times per day until I felt physically exausted. (Gyobu took 3 tries, Butterfly 3 tries, Bull 2 tries, little ♥♥♥♥♥ like Juzou or Shinobi Hunter gone 1st try).
When I beat him... When I was in 3rd phase with Lightning, I had like 1/3 of health and no healing stuff! So I prefered to avoid lightning as despite having this reversal skill, it takes some health anyway! And it was actually really easy to avoid...
Today, I beat Genichiro on my first try on the day.
Beat his first two phases with 4 gourds to spare.
When he switched to his lightning phase I just rushed him and hoped for the best.
When he used his lightning, I used the whirlwind slash ability and kept dodging his lightning with that ability.
Victory.
Yes. The sweet relief of beating a seemingly impossible boss is such a good feeling.
Now I've got a sweet new sword and ninjutsu skills too. :D
