how do you beat first boss?
The drunk dude? It's a monumental feat just reaching him in the first place, the 50 million enemies before him are ridiculous. Then he can seemingly kill me in 1 or 2 hits... parrying works a bit, but then he just does an unblockable attack that i cannot dodge no matter which way i try.

When the game released, i gave up at this spot exactly. Then i came back yesterday and am stuck again. Everyone will get bad dragonrot again. This game is not grabbing me like the souls series does, something about it feels off. The beginning of the game just doesnt seem very engaging to me and the level design so far I am not enjoying.

You mean Jozou Drunkyard in Hirata Estate? To reaching him just run through the first bunch of enemies. Go to those two in the west from where the Jozou is standing. There is a corridor there to the doors that they're guarding. Use deathblow on shield wielders.

If you want to escape, then just run behind the buildings, enemies will not follow you, but you must avoid them still since they can see you. Repeat deathblowing mobs and then start the fight with Jozou. When you reach half the pose or health bar of his, run fast to the standing nearby NPC to help you (either talk to him or just wait until Jozou will come closer).

I have a mod that make's him hard however, that being said I would clear the hostile's out.
After that I would start my boss fight with the fat drunk that look better then my ex wife.
I will fight him by running around him and when he grunt's for his heavy I get further away when he hit's his sword/hammer on the ground ill run in hit him twice you might do 3 since ur not on my mod that increasess his speed by 75 %
And then when he stop's he will try to drink DON"T Let him this will wreck your ♥♥♥♥. you will be able to get 2 or 3 hit's on him there again.
I hope I helped but Zlo method is good to. I am on a harder version so I gotta be more careful Good Luck. Have fun and dont break a keyboard on lady butterfly.

Stay behind him and deflect his 270/360 slashes.
The feeling when you realize he's not even a boss.

The way I go about it is, I go in the building on the left side of the area, killing the two guys in there. Then, I sneak towards the back through the building and backstab the shield guy to Juzou's right. This will alert Juzou, then I run around a bit avoiding him while taking out the other grunts. Once they're gone or if you start to get overwhelmed, run behind the structure on the left you just walked through, this will slowly make them unaggro. Then when Juzou resets to standing in the middle, sneak through the building again and you can backstab him to get rid of his first lifebar. Then, run up to the water's edge and you will find an NPC wearing a blue robe, quickly skip through his dialogue and he will help you fight Juzou.

Juzou has two unblockables, a sweep which you must jump, and a grab you must sidestep.

Ignore the dragonrot. It's totally harmless. Wait to cure it until after you clear whatever you're stuck on.

For Juzou, clear out all of the extra guys first. Clean up the whole initial area, then head off to the left and kill the two guys in the rear doorway of that house. You should be able to manage that without alerting anybody else. Keep heading that direction quietly and you'll come out behind everybody else. Backstab one of the shield guys and then run over and kill the bowman or one or two other mobs as quickly as you can and then run back out the way you came until the whole area settles down. Juzou will return to a general starting position and you can sneak back around the same way over and over until everybody's dead but him, and then do it once more and get a stealth deathblow on him to take off one of his markers completely. While he's recovering from the first deathblow, run over tot he guy standing by the rock and talk to him very quickly, then he'll jump in and help you fight Juzou. Take turns stabbing at him and he'll go down easy.

Kill all the small enemies first. Avoid taking damage as much as possible, maybe stealth?
One you clear out enough weak mobs - there's a man in blue kimono hiding in the pond in front of the Estate. Talk to him and he will attack Jusou, efficiently spreading his attention and tanking him quiet well.

For Jusou himself - deflect, deflect, deflect... This game is all about deflecting, get used to it. If red sign does not appears - it can be deflected. Be wary of swipes and more importantly - grabs.
Before doing a grab he goes into this weird symmetric posture, like a summo fighter and raises his hand - just dash behind him, get out of his line of sight and you get some free hits on his back. He's also easily set on fire with Flame Vent. If you have oil - use it, when he gets on fire it stuns him for easy damage.

Run past all initial enemies until you get to the estate. Hide until they are no longer aggroed (somewhere in the pond).

Then kill all his underlings.

First, the two in the room past the left of the pond can be easily dispatched.

Then follow the room and drop down to Backstab the shield guy next to him.

Hide, wait for de-agro, repeat until fatso is the only one standing.

Backstab him and then kite him towards the other, friendly, samurai guy (or quickly talk to the samurai dude) who will help you kill fatso. He should be located next to a rock near the water.

This is the most tedious strategy, but has much higher chance for success. If you suck at deflecting or timing jumps, I would practice that before taking him on.

ok i will try this stuff. i think part of the combat i am not understanding is the sweeps... sweeps are signaled as a red sign too? I thought according to one of the tutorials that they show up a different color. I am supposed to jump over a sweep right?

All unblockables are indicated by the same red kanji over Wolf’s head. You have to watch the attack animation to know what kind of attack it is.

For sweeps you jump. You can also press jump a second time while over an enemy to kick them for some posture damage.

For thrusts, you either deflect as they land, or if you have the mikiri counter skill you can press the dodge button to perform a special counter that deals a lot of posture damage.

For grapples, you just have to dodge or run from them.

You can avoid all his red attacks by just running backwards.

You may as well practice running... You'll need it not long after that boss.

The red kanji is not the same for every unblockable attack, they differ depending on the attack type.

Another solution would be: if it's really too hard for you, try to go another way. If you consider the drunkard to be your first boss, you likely haven't gone far in the first zone. So just go this way, see how hard that is, try to get more beads and stuff from that path, and when you're having troubles again, go back to the drunkard.

The red kanji for the perilous attacks is only the first one in the list. It’s the same for all unblockables.

The others listed there are other kanji that appear in the game such as the one that appears when you ressurect, or when you receive Unseen Aid, and the kanji used for status effects like healing, burn, and terror, etc.

when you approach go through the building and coridoor on the left to get behind him and clear out all of the enemies, you will likely get caught so run away to reset him and come back. keep doing so until he is on his own.

do not start fighting the drunkard or trigger the other samurai to help you until all the other enemies are cleared out.

like all other bosses you need to learn how to regonise his moves and known when the opportunities to attack are, as you get better you can be more agressive which in this fight gives the added bonus of keeping the bosses attention away from the other samuri so that he lasts longer.

The flame vent can be used to give you a few hits from a safer distance and the firecracker can be used to give you some free close range hits.

if you are really stuck keep your distance until he drinks from the flask and get a few hits in before moving away, repeat
