When you die in this game, you lose half your XP and Sen (money) permanently. You can't get it back by returning to the place you die. It is therefore very crucial that you store your Sen (money) in coin purses before a bossfight or tough area before taking it on so you won't lose your money.
However there's an RNG mechanic in this game called "Unseen Aid" which is essentially a percentage chance to keep ALL your XP and Sen after dying. ie) If my Unseen Aid chance is 30%, there is a 30% chance upon death that I will keep all my XP and Sen instead of permanently losing half. However, since this is an RNG mechanic, it's not reliable or consistent.
There's also a mechanic called "Dragonrot" in this game which is basically a disease you spread to other NPCs as a result of dying too many times. NPCs cannot die from Dragonrot (with the exception of one insignificant NPC) although you cannot continue their respective side quests IF they have Dragonrot . A variety of NPCs can obtain Dragonrot such as merchants and friendly NPCs. It should also be noted that possessing Dragonrot reduces your chances of receiving Unseen Aid as mentioned above. To cure Dragonrot, you will first have to talk to Emma a couple of times and then you can use a Dragon's Blood Droplet at a Sculptor's Idol to cure it. .
Hope this helps.
Spoiler : Inosuke Nogami's (or rather Nogami Inosuke's) mother dies after your first true death. She's the elderly lady who gives you the Young Lord's Bell Charm. If you don't collect her Dragonrot sample immediately, she dies from it.
Update: It seems like it's a scripted event where she dies regardless if you die or not. Apparently defeating Lady Butterfly is the trigger(?) I'm not too sure. Perhaps Dragonrot hastens her death instead of directly causing it?
However, there's a 30% chance that you won't lose anything.
That chance degradates the more you die. To be specific, friendly NPCs that you met before start catching a certain decease that can't kill them, but makes their life insufferable.
For every sick NPC the chance to avoid death penalty gets reduced, with the first to get sick having the most radical change: from 30% to ~17%?
Any additional ones after that have lesser effect, 1-3% per person.
Good news: at some point the game will introduce ability to cure them all at once.
