It's closer to Pokemon (for better or worse) but makes some great updates to the formula such as swapping IVs/EVs for assignable stat points and being able to freely change your 'mon's moveset any time outside of combat. The game also offers a huge amount of difficulty customization as well as a randomizer.
Coromon doesn't have the mechanical depth Monster Sanctuary has (very few games do tbh), but I'd say it's one of the best monster taming RPGs currently available.
