How challenging is this game?
The only thing keeping me on the fence about buying the game is that I'm afraid it's just too easy, just like Pokémon.

Collecting and making builds is all nice, but if there's little to no challenge, it feels kinda pointless to me.

So, how challenging is this game? Do the stronger enemies make smarter decisions, or is it random attacking through out the entire game? Do they have good teams?

tl;dr, how challenging is the game? The most details the better!

Thank you!

I think the developer says it well with this quote:

Speaking of detail, check out my review in which I discuss some of the basic aspects of the game:

Anyway, yes, it is challenging in the fact that you actually have think about how you build your monsters and team. In Pokemon, you can essentially just rely on one or two powerful monsters and beat the game like that without much thought by spamming a powerful move. Here, if you don’t have some sort of strategy—you’re gunna feel that.

As a good starting point, check out the free demo download on the store page to get a look at some of the systems and take it for a spin (the demo is pretty long honestly.

Oh yeah, and the last update added PvP, so if you’re into that, it’s available.

Thank you a lot for all the information, friend! It's great to know the devs have a different mindset regarding the challenging aspect of the game, compared to Pokémon. It's my biggest gripe with unmodded Pokémon games.

Your review is also very helpful!

I've been playing the demo and it's been quite enjoyable, so I'll most likely buy it.

Thanks again!

Cool deal man, glad it could help.

On a secondary note, feel free to pop by the Discord -- lotta nice peeps around there and the devs as well https://discord.gg/D72WhuJ

The problem comes from there only being a few feasible strategies. Most people who say you have to 'think' mean wiki the answer as much time will be wasted trying to find a strat that works well in practice. It makes the game feel limiting. Also upgrading is an entire overhaul of a monster so then your stuck grinding to get your one working strat back.

To be honest, I 100% disagree with their statement. There are TONS of good strategies, not just "one way only" or something. Furthermore, what he's talking about with "upgrading" I presume is "evolution", which, as you might've seen in my review, changes the monster, not a 100% upgrade or something.

So really, no -- no accurate at all.

I've played this game for some 150+ hours now and there are tons of ways to play and have fun in this game. People are nuzlocking the game people are doing a neutral only run etc! It is possible, and imo its like whats conan's saying

Thanks for the info again, guys. I think it's safe to say I'll buy the game now. ^^

Off the top of my head:

several viable generic Stall/Wall builds
Age Stall build
Charge stack stall
about half a dozen viable generic set up and sweep teams
combo stack and sweep
full Bleed team
a couple of dodge/blind builds
Shield burst set up and sweep
dot stack team
chill/crit team

Completely disagree. I only started using the wiki after I was done with all the content and wanted an easy way to keep track on the different shift passives.

So far, I have made 4 full teams(a team is 6 monsters) and none of them were derived from the wiki or guides, but my own experience and preference.

Haven't had any trouble building myself. There is a reward for more efficient setups with star ratings but the game is flexible enough to let you play how you want to. As long as you keep a copy of each monster you can fairly easily switch team setups too. Only real gripe was going into the Keeper fight before I had everyone at level 10 since all his monsters will be based off your highest and couldn't just refight him.

While I get what you mean, that's really just an introductory / tutorial fight against Will. It's designed to be "you can win or lose this". If you lose, no worries, if you win, just a Reward Box Level 1, nothing too special. But if you want to play around with Keeper fights, just talk again to the Keeper Fight trainer guy in the Keeper's Stronghold, and he will offer a few challenges at different keeper rank. If you beat these challenges, you get some cool rewards.

Yes I understand that its a pointless fight but its still dumb to lose due to such an unfair reason and not be able to refight. I still almost won with a lvl 11, 4 lvl 9s and a 6 (who was unskilled). The power spike at 10 is pretty hard to overcome.

Well the Duel trainer tells you to have a team of 6 monsters, I think with the first Keeper duel not be mandatory to be won it can be a good warning in a case like this to have a proper team of 6 for the next Keeper duel ;)
