Is it possible to 5 star all the champions without eagle?
My first playthrough I chose eagle, and after ages grinding in the arena to grind badges to bring my whole party up to level 15, I finally went after 5 starring all the champions. However, one thing I noticed was how much I was reliant on my starter for all of this; I did, like 5 attempts with my Monk on the Minitaur boss, but I just couldn't get enough overkill damage in, and for whatever reason, the fight difficulty is set so low that finishing in 3 turns with 100% health isn't enough for a 5 star. But once I switched to Eagle, the Shock debuff let me get my combo meter high enough to overkill the boss enough for a 5 star rating. Specter also went down pretty quickly, only taking 3 attempts before the rng in his damage patterns let me get 100% health with one heal before the kill (and that boss thankfully doesn't need to be overkilled in order to get 5 stars, just 3 turns with 100% health gives enough points). I honestly have no idea how I could beat this without my starter. I tried for ages on my second account with lion, but the level bump from 9 to 10 makes Minitaur much too tanky to go down with enough overkill (3 turns 100% health is easy, even if sometimes I have to use the burn damage to get the kill).

Even though most of the starters are pretty balanced, and Eagle is basically made for boss killing, I'm pretty sure its impossible (or at least reliant on RNG giving 100% critial hits) to get 5 stars in the demo on all the bosses. The attack buff is mandatory in order to overkill the Minitaur and the magic buff in order to kill Specter within 3 turns, and the only generic monster with a party buff of that (full offense eats up Catzerker's turn and getting 5 stars means you need to finish asap) is the bird or the slime, which have directly inferior stats to the other monsters, in addition to not having the Shock debuff. I really don't think its possible to 5 star all the champions in this game if you chose something like lion or toad for a starter.

its possible, i did it first time around with wolf, but its difficult. you have to setup combos the same way, getting as high as you can for the final hit, and make sure you're hitting an elemental weakness. eagle i was able to get most bosses during play, but with wolf i had to be a bit overleveled, or once they all got upgrades to lvl10, i had to be 15. the base team i used for wolf when i did those the first time around was varro, blob, and wolf. the overkill is important. it lets you lose points on time and health, but make up for it still. varro and blob have lesser stats, but the slime still does decent damage and builds combo, and the varro takes the same time to buff as catzerker, but adds his party wide, while having one (possibly two?) more combo hits himself. being slightly weaker, was made up for with the extra damage it brought to wolf with its large crit.

It could likely be done with any strong final hit monster, as long as they're hitting a weakness, or have enough crit damage to make up for hitting normal

Wolf is kind of the best starter overall though; Eagle is only better in boss fights, Frog is more defensive and Tiger is... fire element for the minotaur boss? With the strategy relying so much on your starter for damage it just seems like choosing the last two make the challenge nearly impossible without god tier rng.

I've been fighting Minitaur for ages with Yowie - Catzerker - (Monk or Tiger) at level 15, and I can't get 5 stars. Turn 1: Glorycast, Full Offense (Monk / Tiger), fire attack. Turn 2: Support, Beating lv3, fire attack. Turn 3: Beating lv3, fire attack, Slash lv3. Used skill reset to spec just for this boss fight (yowie skipped his ice tree for more attack and health, tiger skipped max earth attack for more crit stats). 3 turns 100% health is very consistent if I start with regen over full offense (stone rain on catzerker is always an instant fail though), and even after I shifted to using sidekick on turn 2, I'm still only hitting 5-10% overkill on most attempts. At this point its more of an rng nightmare than a challenge, where as Wolf and Eagle let strategy be enough to win.

Alright, i went in and was able to do it at 15 without using any starter. Vaero/yowie/monk made pretty easy work of him considering the near 50% crit chance on monk. im thinking maybe just your gear might be different than mine, catzerker and vaero are pretty similar in what they bring, but cat is an overall upgrade, i just didnt have a 15 one on that save. replacing yowie with magmapillar got close, but it would be rng if they got it or not since magma has so much lower defense. there were a few other close partys, but nothin really fire oriented got it as easy as monk did. Similarly, i had trouble replacing yowie with another fire and making it reliable, and switching out catzerker and vaero with eachother. even using fungi seemed valid, but would never get the overkill. his 3 stack of poison (boss resists) still does 450 damage+, which is actually more than the burn he would get from other enemies, but he brings no buffs or real damage outside of poison in this situation.

You should be able to 5 star any of the current champions consistently without using any specific starter or relying on RNG. Just finding the right monster setup, skills, food, equipment and using the right order/skills in combat. Finding the right combination of all of this is the challenge.

Slight necro but whatever there's little activity for now anyway.

The Eagle just have a very straightfoward hyper offensive playstyle. I have 5 starred every champion without spiritual animal at all for the most part. So you can clearly do it with any of them as well. The Eagle also happen to have the chance to exploit weaknesses of every current champion in the demo since it has access to fire, wind and magic which are the 3 weaknesses spread accross all the current champions. Making it even easier for the Eagle.

Also the automatic Shock at the start of a battle is helpful in a champion fight but there's plenty of way to dominate champions without relying on the almighty eagle.

I know this post is old, but i have a questions regearding the starter discussion. Will we be able to get the other starters somehow later in the main game? If not, then i would reroll maybe, dont know.

I did 5 stars on minitaur with Specter, Monk and Tengu. (no starter) Killed it in 2 turns. Ignite, fiery punch, fireball. Next turn again. Just need max Level and upgraded gear.

We plan to make them obtainable in the endgame
Thanks, seems good. I believe it's a nice idea to make them available, but only in end game.

"Should" is a pretty loaded word. Does this mean your team has tested a whole bunch of combos and found plenty that work? Or that you wanted it to be possible but you're not really sure?

Not quite, even when this post was made almost a year ago, by that point the game was already tested by hundreds of players for about a year. The demo version (which this post referred to) was available to the public for pretty long and the balancing (and many features added since then) were based on community feedback.

I feel it is quite impossible to get 5 stars against some of the boss monsters at 29 (I am using a setup that someone has managed to do all at 25.) I regret that I did not do it at lower level and I really do not want to start over again.

No worries m8, it’s not particularly harder, but actually easier at higher level. Higher level you have more monsters and talent points to work with to create a good strategy, meanwhile the Champions scale more linearly.

If you like, I would advise popping by the Discord for active team advice https://discord.gg/RmDfZmG

Specter is the only boss I didn't get 5 star at the moment, can someone give a clue of what team I can use? Wolf does a good damage, but I need some other high neutral magic damage dealer.

Kongamoto works well for that ^_^

I used Dodo / Tanuki / Kongamoto

I did it! Dodo/Kongamato/Wolf made a great team.

Thanks Conan ^^
