AoE II "Difinitive Edituon' over wrote the original game and doesn't work

I even tried to Uninstall the game and reinstall but the Install fails at 45% each time . I just want my original game back .

By original game do you mean HD edition? if so that is a different steam game entirely and shouldn't Overwrite it. or did you have a actual original copy form Ye olden days that you managed to preserve only on your PC and for some reason was stored in a steam game folder?

Stored in the Steam game folder in a folder named 'AoE2DE' at that?

I do not know what you are talking about, but the original CD version of AoE II (Age of Kings and Age of Conquerors) is old and outdated even if someone could get the CD game version to still work properly at this point. The only main reason to still play the original game is single player campaigns because of nostalgia. Also, HD should still be working properly on Steam even though it was abandoned.
