Tampering detected. Please restart the application
Hi, since the last update (the one that brought Age of Empires I graphics to the title screen) I've been encountering a super weird issue. While playing it sometimes happens that the game crashes with the following:

A running process may be interfering with the correct operation of AoE2 DE. This may be caused by anti-virus software, malware, game overlays, or other active processes on your PC.

It happens randomly - sometimes it never shows up during an hour-long game, sometimes it crashes a game ten minutes after starting. Needless to say it makes playing multiplayer essentially impossible and even campaigns are not really playable with this - it forces me to save the game every few minutes.

As for the possible interfering processes - I am using Avast antivirus software and I never had any issue with it. When the issue happened for the first time, I added AoE2 DE as a full exception for Avast, but sadly that didn't help. I have no idea what else could be causing the issue - my Windows 10 system is pretty much a clean install (fully updated), the only apps installed besides Steam and Avast are Piriform Speccy and UPlay (and games that come with them). If it matters, I run dual-boot with Windows for games and Mint for everything else, but the systems are totally independent of each other.

There is of course the possibility of malware, though a piece of malware that would crash a running game would be kinda lame. Also both Avast and Windows are fully updated, i.e. I hope malware shouldn't be a thing in this case.

Please, did somebody else encounter this? If so, is there a solution that can help? Thanks a lot in advance!

Events and patches causing issues
I always seem to do fine until events come out and then I have issues with the game "tampering detected", error box at the beginning of every game because of event mods that I have to go turn off or dropping me from multiplayer games or lobbies. Aside from the 1st sundjata camp crashing the game, events are the only thing causing me big problems but every time there's an event or patch, I have to do some kind of adjustments to get my game working again. Keep up the good work on those patches. I have faith that it's only going to get better. Just hoping this gets ironed out.

-The first and easiest test I guess would just be to turn of avast completely whenever you play. If you stop getting the message, then maybe there is a software conflict with that av.

Hello everyone! This notification is triggered when a third-party application is trying to interact with the game. With that in mind:
  • Are there any applications or programs (that you know of) that might be trying to interact with the game?
Antivirus and firewall programs are the most likely culprits. You can try disabling them to see if it improves your experience; otherwise, any information you can provide that will help us reproduce this issue will be most welcome!

Thanks for the report!

Hi, thanks for the replies. For a time I kept Avast disabled and it seemed to be helping, but a few minutes ago it went down even with Avast turned off. Not sure how I can help with reproducing the issue, since it's obviously a software issue. Let me share list of running tasks and services:

Thanks a lot in advance!

Thank you for the additional information! I've passed this along to our QA team so they can take a closer look at what might be causing the issue. 👍

This happened once with me when steam was running an update of a different game at the same time that I launched aoeIIde.

Same issue for me

My friend is having the same issue, it's driving us nuts. Have uninstalled all AV software, disabled windows defender etc... issue persists. Frustrated.

Hello everyone! This issue should have been resolved with the recent March Update.

If, for some reason, you are still encountering the error message—particularly after disabling any programs that might interfere with the game, such as antivirus software—please let us know. Be sure to include the following information so we can continue to dig into the problem:
  • As @Falkenstein provided above, a full list of running processes on the computer will be helpful.
  • A copy of your dxdiag.
  • A list of steps you've taken to try and resolve the issue.
Thank you all, and I hope to hear good news!

Hi, thanks for the news, but unfortunately it didn't do anything, the issue happened again. I'm attaching link to my dxdiag: https://www.dropbox.com/s/won00596g1n9bwu/DxDiag.txt?dl=0

Windows Defender is off.

Ran ccleaner, cleaned everything, restarted PC and the problem persists. Will try disabling all mods. The only two mods are Small Trees and Grid.

Oliver Tree Apr 2, 2020 @ 12:25am
Disabling the mods didn't work.

We are using a WiFi network.

Using ethernet cable made it WORSE?!

The game is installed on the D: drive which is an HDD.

We will try installing on the C: drive which is an SSD.
