Lag spikes followed by fast forwarding of the game (Multiplayer)
Hey there,

I recently switched to DE. I was pleasantely surprised that it ran absolutely smoothely on my HP 250 G6.

Howver, with more multiplayer games in, something started to happen:
I would randomely get 2-3 second lag spikes (everything stands still) followed by fast forwarding of the game so it would be synced again (I guess)

Other than that, games run really smoothely. I did several benchmark tests with good scores everytime (1013).

My speedtest show around 20 MBIT Download, and around 4.5 MBIT Upload, which should be more than enough. I also ALWAYS play on ethernet, never on wifi!. Never had any problems while playing games online.

MY Laptop Specs:
Intel Core i5-7200U
2.5 GHz, up to 3.1 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology
3 MB cache, 2 cores
Intel HD Graphics 620 graphic card
8 GB DDR4-2133 SDRAM
Direct 12

I have VSync off, if this has to do something with anything (but I assume it doesnt matter as I would have the lag as well in single player).

Can anyone help me out? Those lag spikes only happen in multiplayer (i mostly play 1v1, so it happens even if there isnt much stuff on the screen)

-Maybe you have some scanning going on? Add the whole aoe2de folder to the exceptions list, want to try that?

-I guess you can try turning vsync on. It is a bit odd that single player works fine.

-Really makes it feel like something is throttling.

Just disabled all mods, without help. I also dont have any malware or other antivirus programs (as I read something about that in the forums)

Vsync is always forced on since the last patch regardless of settings, he literally can't turn it off.

Anyway is it anything like what I see happening?

Fps starts dropping gradually until it hits single digits (sound goes out momentarily too) and then it recovers. I play only offline, happens every game, doesn't matter if it's skirmish or campaign.

Seems like throttling, right? Wrong! It's reproduceable, for example it happens the exact same time every time I load the save I made the recording from. And of course I didn't have this before the "wonderful" expansion dropped.

Oh, and it happens on the beta patch / PTR / PTS/ whatever that's called too.

@zaxx: No, it looks different for me.

@Dare Devil just tried VSYNC ON this time, same issue. Just double checked: Absolutely no issues on single player.

It's more like here:

altough not as frequently.
Is there really no solution to this? =(

Yep, actually troubleshooted it since then and it was a memory issue so sorry for polluting your thread with unrelated stuff.

Now that I forgot to unsubscribe from this thread I might as well try to help: you can run this:
http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest
This is a really good test for your internet connection because it checks for bufferbloat too. In simple terms that shows how consistent your connection is as sudden fluctuation in your ping can cause lag / packet loss in online games even if you have awesome internet and you're not playing through wifi.

You get a grade for bufferbloat at the end, A and B are great, C maybe causes issues in games that operate on a high tickrate and send a lot of packets, the rest is bad. If you pass with a good grade you'll know that the issue is not on your end basically.

@zaxx: Tried the test, bufferbloat was a B everytime.

Still having this problem... dont seem to be the only one, do the devs not react to this problem at all?

at least some suggestions would be nice.

I have the same issues, fps does not drop below 140 fps (capped at 144), but the game lags for several seconds and then quickly catches up. It used to be fine for months until the current map rotation. This seems a lot lilke packet loss, since I am living in Germany it could very well be my isp (Vodafone), but discord, twitch, youtube etc work fine. Playing a game with F11 enabled gave me this at the end:

Any other suggestions? Dont seem to be the only one with the problems.
Just did another ping test, always 0% loss rate.

Did reinstalling the game help anyone ever?
Please help.
