Multiplayer problem. Aways getting disconnected after 4-5 minutes.
I tried 3 games in that match making system, in every single one of them the game randomly disconnects with 5 minutes playing, (now I have 3 defeats, lel)

And yes, my connection is working perfectly fine, I don't even get the usual "only steam client random disconnect", so what can I do? (if there is anything I can do).

I'm really disheartened, I hyped this game way too much believing I would finally be able to play it online (because p2p was terrible on hd, and they said we would have servers on de...)

EDIT1: I noticed that i can't get in the lobby anymore every time that happens (That "trying to connect" message).
I need to restart the game so I can enter the lobby again (just so I wait 5 minutes in the queve to be able to play for 5 minutes before I get kicked by the server xD)

EDIT2: Yes, I tested on the new patches, still nothing changed. I am 0/8 on the ranked ladder. Glorious xD

EDIT3: Yes, I tested most "fixes" in the book. Connecting the pc directly in the cable, changing routers, disabling firewall/antivirus, QoS/etc router settings, etc. Absolutely no change, aways getting kicked out of the game on 4-5 minutes mark :c

EDIT4: I actually managed to finish a match by using a free vpn, and for now that seems to be the only known temporary workaround for that issue (Worked for me, I don't know about everyone else...)

Alright, everyone! This is still something we are attempting to narrow down to its definite causes. For now, please bear with me as I begin to sound a little redundant on behalf of figuring this out.

Here’s what I need from you if you are reliably experiencing this issue:
  • The type of Router you are using. Many people provided their on-board computer specifications, but I need the actual router you are using. Please include a link to the item or store so we can confirm the details.
  • If you are not using a Router: the type of Modem into which you are hard-wired. This may be a Netgear or another modem. Please include a link to the item or store so we can confirm the details.
  • [Even if you provided it before] Your Internet Provider and the Country where you live. This is more of a reference point than anything, but I want to be 100% sure that the team has this information in case it is needed.
As an example:
I know this will be redundant for some of you, but I would like to ensure that I have as much (and as accurate) information as possible so we can try to trace a pattern. As of now, the issue seems to be related to the routers people are using—particularly since most people who have “upgraded” to a new router have reported that it fixed the issue.

Thank you for your ongoing assistance in working through this problem; I know it is frustrating, and can assure you that we are doing everything we can to reliably reproduce and diagnose the issue internally. The sooner you can get me this information, the easier it will be for me to compile it for our engineers.

Game crashing in almost every single multiplayer game now. Was stable for weeks and now the game is unplayable. My computer dosen't struggle to run the game so its an issue on your end.


If microsoft hoped this game would become a minor e-sport, that's laughable. Godamn voobly was far more reliable with antiquated P2P.

* What Network Hardware are you using? Router with cable
* What ISP do you use? Voo, Belgium
* In what region are you connecting to the game? Belgium
* Are you using a VPN? No
* Any other information about your networking that might help the team... No problems with internet in general, no problems with other games

Same Belgium, VOO, No VPN, Can't finish 1 game online...

wtf is going on with these crashes
i have yet to complete 1 online game before i get that damn "disconnected from the server" message. Anyone know if this "bug" will get fixed? i doubt its on my end cuz i play alot of world of tanks and I never have this issue. so frustrating when im ahead and about to slaughter my opponents and then I get that message

The game is broken. Most people are experiencing this issue.

What may help is using a VPN and enabling the "small packets" option.

idk but if you are playing rank game and you have this problem you loss. ♥♥♥♥ age i wish they fix it

I used the free protonVPN, which solves the issue for me. It intoduced a few other issues, such as having a hard time connecting to xbox live, which I was able to solve by going into my windows 10 settings under game conenctivity you can perform a connection check. If it sais that your NAT type is faulty, that's the reason for connectivity issues with VPN. You can click the fix button unterneath it in the windows settings and it should work.

Bloody annoying workaround having to use a VPN in order to enjoy MP, but still - it works.

my connection score is around 1100 for online playing......even tried using a wired connection... 10 feet away from the router. have never completed 1 damn match....always about 20 minutes into the battle. im not a computer tech guy, but how can i resolve this? btw, this happens when i join or host a match

I'm actually using a paid VPN, NordVPN. I don't expect anyone to buy a VPN just to play a game of AOE 2 though. Luckily I already had a subscription. I have heard of people using free VPNs and having success with this, but I don't personally know any. Good luck.

Can you help me out? I am using NordVPN as well but when I open up DE it says it's offline and needs to connect to the internet even though I'm connected through the VPN. Idk what gives.

Yes I can help, in NordVPN program, go to settings (cog in top right corner next to minimize and quit) then go to Advanced. Make sure Protocol is UDP, and turn on Obfuscated Servers setting. Then connect to a server (there will be less server options now). Play multiplayer, it should no longer drop at 5 minutes.

Can you try the English obfuscated server? That's the one I'm using, for some reason i've had problems when connecting to other countries.

Can you try the English obfuscated server? That's the one I'm using, for some reason i've had problems when connecting to other countries.

Sadly I still can't even with different servers. Still getting the cannot connect to Steam when trying to open up Mp. Unlucky me then :(

Played against bots for +30 hours, no technical issues to speak of, then on my first online match after 10 minutes I crashed to desktop, with no warning bar a few seconds of freezing beforehand.

Like bruh. For a minute I thought I'd alt+f4ed by accident. Australian servers.
